I tried meditation for the first time ever and it made my body feel weird

I'd really like some advice from any experienced meditators out there please. I've not had the discipline to practice mediation on my own, so I went to the Buddhist centre for a drop-in session. The meditation was guided and lasted a full hour. We went through four stages which started with bringing awareness to the body followed by different ways to focus on breathing.

I understand you're meant to feel an intense sense of relaxation, which I definitely did, however, this feeling was a pins and needles sensation felt mostly in my hands and upper lip (strangely). The feeling was so intense I felt like I was very disconnected with my hands and they weighed very heavily when I tried to lift them. It's hard to explain.. if you're wondering how I was sitting, it was simply cross-legged with my hands together in my lap.

TL;DR - I got intense pins and needles after an hour of breathing mediation - is this normal?!

Thank you
