Coursework is marked internally & exam boards ask for a sample to check marking is accurate.

Ok, so say you're doing a video for Media studies, and things go wrong in the production process - which counts for more grades, the video itself or the evidence backing up your organisation in strained circumstances?

I thought all A Level coursework was externally marked (that's what I was at least told).

OP - all this is wrong. I do OCR Psychology A level also, and all the coursework is marked externally. If it helps, the grade boundary for an A last year was roughly 60 out of 80.

Last year for AS, Sociology and English Language coursework was marked by the teacher and then all remarked externally as I remember everyone being upset because their coursework mark had gone down dramatically.

Doesn't it depend on the size of the class?

No, it depends on the subject and exam board for whether coursework is marked internally and externally. What happened with yours is that it was moderated externally (happens with every piece of coursework), and the exam board thought your teachers' marking was too generous. If it's a small class however (like my R.S. class was last year), the coursework is marked internally and everyone's is moderated externally, as opposed to just a selection.

OCR Psychology coursework is marked externally. I think quite often timed courseworks (e.g. Philosophy I think?) are marked externally too.

Thanks
Oh I like the sound of that grade boundary!
Will our teachers say to us "Thats roughly 65 UMS" then? Or will we not have a clue until results day?

It really depends on your teacher. Mine won't really give me any hint as to the actual mark, other than to tell me she reckons it's an A. What your teacher is very unlikely to do is to tell you the UMS mark (remember that 60 out of 80 raw marks will scale to 80 out of 100 UMS mars), because most teachers simply don't have a clue about UMS. If you're lucky, you'll get told (roughly) what sort of grade or mark it is, but since teachers don't actually mark it, they probably won't sit down and work it all out. You'll have to find out your actual mark on results day, I'm afraid!

Oh right thanks. I asked my teacher today and he said that he would tell us roughly what grade and attach a mark sheme, so we could look ourselves what we think we would get. It's hard to mark a subjective subject like Psychology though, especially your own, so I'm not sure if that will help. Ooooh well!
