Accommodation stress

Hello!
I know this seems like a very trivial thing to stress about. I have suffered from considerable OCD and anxiety for most of my life and going to uni is something that I have always really wanted but told myself I just couldn’t do due to how much I struggle even leaving the house sometimes. However after going to a few open days at Keele and chatting to support staff I have decided I want to live at Keele (I previously said I’d go to the closest uni and come home every night), as this will allow me to get my independence and hopefully the most out of my degree. I do not start until next September, however I need to plan way in advance so that I don’t freak at the last minute.
I am opting for an en-suite room as this is something I need in terms of keeping my own space a certain way, in order and completely hygienic. I am just wondering which building to live in. I would prefer a 3/4 bed, I like quieter rural spaces, well kept rooms and I am not interested in drinking/partying, just in study space and being comfortable. I’m not one for socialising so that side isn’t really a priority
I’m a little torn between Holly Cross and The Oaks and Lindsay Court- I am hoping to study Psychology and these are a nice short walk from Dorothy Hodgkins, but I couldn’t tour Holly Cross on an open day. I am just in need of some pointers in terms of accommodation if possible!

Hi! I'm in the exact same boat. I can't answer phone calls and my social anxiety is horrendous. My OCD has calmed down these past 2 years but shopping for accommodation flared it up. (Never realised how persistent on one colour scheme I was and how many panic attacks I've had over not being able to buy a certain colour in kitchen essentials.) But I plucked up the courage to go to Uni after having 3 years being home bounded. You aren't alone! I'm so happy you've believed in yourself and chosen Uni. :biggrin:I'm going this year and stopping in Lindsay Hall washbasin room. I looked into the Lindsay en-suite but the room seemed on the small side to me -probably due to the larger bed (I don't mind not having) but you do have your own bathroom. Lindsay is a social area with a bar whilst holly cross doesn't have a bar. Lindsay and Holly are the most rural accommodation and Holly, is a 10 min walk from the centre of campus whilst Lindsay is 5 mins distance from the centre of campus... which is maybe a plus for you? Both have 24-hour security and residence support. The en suite rooms are a lot more cleaner than standard rooms. I would say go to an Open day and ask to see Holly and the Oakes. It will really put your mind at ease and you can then compare both en-suits and see which one you get most for what you pay. Itll be the best experience of your life (Im told and actually believe) Congratulations on your decision!!! and Good luck!

Thank you so much! Well done to you too  I think Lindsay Court is the way forward but I will go to another Open Day and ask to look at Holly Cross and The Oakes, I just get so worried about asking. I hope that everything goes well for you!

no problem, Thankyou ! :biggrin:Yeah I learnt the hard way and never asked. Went to the open days after I had accepted my offer but whatever you choose I know it'll be the right choice. I personally would go for Lindsay but we may have different outlooks on such things. So go with what makes you comfortable as you know yourself the best
I don't have OCD but I would defiantly say I have a lot of anxiety and I could not agree more with how you feel, (Want to go to uni but worried because I struggle when leaving the house). I have previously stayed at Keele for a week during NCS and I stayed in Lindsay Court and it was amazing, the bed is quite large and the room is big (Looks smaller because of the big bed) I think I have some photos of the room I stayed in if you would like me to try and dig them out. The en-suite part is very nice but let me warn you. THESE TOILETS DO NOT HAVE THE SLOW CLOSING LIDS, YOU WILL DEAFEN YOURSELF IF THE SEAT DROPS

also don't know why I didn't finish writing this last time

Hi there

If you haven't already, check out this webpage which has lots of information about how we, here at Keele help you settle in to university life: www.keele.ac.uk/students/residencelife/heretosupportyou/

There is lots of opportunities within your first few weeks at Keele to meet different people and to immerse yourself into university life! An example of some of the activities going on in Welcome Week for this year can be found here: www.keele.ac.uk/welcome/undergraduate/

Hope this helps!

You can pick what type of accommodation you would like. However, keele tell you where you will be on campus. This may be different for students with certain needs.

I have lived in Holly Cross and Lindsay Court and the rooms and kitchens were exactly the same. Holly Cross is only like an extra 2 min walk to teaching buildings than Lindsay Court so it is by no means rural. The only ensuite that is different is the new Barnes blocks which is more expensive but is much more modern.
