Going to UWE and feeling like a lesser compared to those in Bristol uni

So I'm seeing certain articles online and whatnot talking about uwe being a lesser half compared to Bristol. Wondering how to block this out once I'm there considering I had to enter through clearing I'm down in the gutter with negative thoughts. I just don't want to go there and someone asks what uni do you go to and you tell them and hear an "Oh". Don't know what i expect writing this, I guess a sense of peace of mind I suppose.

Well, for the most part it is; but then so too is Bristol proper relative to, say, Cambridge. At any rate, this being 2018 and not 1998: if you're attending an institution for the 'prestige' factor, rather than because your chosen degree will commend you to employment in a (hopefully, specific) competitive field of your choosing, you might as well save yourself three years by incinerating £30,000 of public money in a backyard bonfire.
"I just don't want to go there" tells you that you shouldn't. If you feel like you're better than UWE, then you can reapply to other universities after resitting A levels, or transfer to a better university later.

These thoughts are probably true of many students attending the ex-polytechnic compared to the 'University of' in their city.

This put me at ease a little, although resitting isn't an option. I don't want to waste a year regardless of the opportunities you know what I mean. I hadn't thought about transferring to another uni that idea gives me a clear mind, I suppose I could prove myself within the first year and use the score to transfer elsewhere.

Completely disagree wholeheartedly. State schools drill into you the significance of going to a prestigious russell group university from year 7 alone.

This is a fair point but, subconsciously everybody cares to a degree. Also when applying to a job in the future they will also care.

Depends on your degree and what you want to do after
I'm in a similar situation. Left college with good grades, but studied a BTEC which was unrelated to what I now want to do as a career. I don't much feel like going back and doing another two years of college, which just seems like a waste of time to me.Moving forward all we can really do is work hard to get a first in our respective degrees, and if that doesn't qualify us for gainful employment, we can always take those grades forward into a Masters at a genuinely prestigious university. Beats doing college again. As for condescending ***** those will be there no matter what you accomplish.

I'd imagine that would be annoying for you. Yeah i'm also thinking its better to keep moving forward.

Hi @bigballer32 :hello:,

It's great to hear that you accepted a place with us here at UWE Bristol.

I thought that I would just give you a bit more information on what you can expect as part of life at UWE and hopefully it will put your mind at ease.

One of the strongest things about UWE is that it is well-respected by employers. Lots of our courses are designed in partnership with employers, so you can be sure that you will be learning skills that you can put into practice on your first day at your job after graduating. There are many opportunities to undertake placements and internships at UWE, so you will be getting real-world experience during your degree, which will make you really attractive to employers after you graduate. According to 2017 HESA figures, 78.1% of our graduates were in professional or managerial roles 6 months after graduating, in comparison to the market average of 71%.

You'll be well-supported throughout your studies here, as we have many services that you can access for free, from 24/7 well-being support to academic specialist advice.

Which course have you accepted an offer for? We have some amazing facilities across our campus, such as a robotics lab (opened in partnership with the University of Bristol) an animation studios. We are continually investing in our campus so that all buildings and facilities are state-of-the-art in order to give our students and staff the best experience.

And then there's Bristol itself - it's such an amazing city! Whatever your taste, there is always something to do. Over 50% of students that come to study here end up staying in the city (according to a DLHE survey in 2015), and the Sunday Times voted it the best place to live in Britain last year. You can find out a bit more about Bristol on our website, which may help you when you imagine yourself coming to study here.

I hope that has helped and that you do decide to come and study with us this September. We would love to have you here!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Lois

Thanks for the peace of mind. Yeah I hope to use the facilities! I think I'm more calm and collected now. Just the Russell group thing bummed me out. However I do see the advantages of UWE now. Thanks everybody and the UWE rep. (Hopefully accommodation can be sorted ahaha don't want to stay private)
