Accomodation Question: Heronbank or Lakeside?

Hey all, I'm just applying for my accommodation and I can't decide a place for my 3rd choice. 1st being Jack Martin, 2nd Rootes.

I'm very sporty and intend to use the gym a lot so that should certainly be a factor to take into account. (I know Tocil is the closest to the sports centre but there seems to be some sort of problem with it next year and student may have to re-locate.) I also would like to go out a fair amount, about 2-3 nights a week. I know they're both 15 minutes walk from the Union though :s-smilie:.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding which of these I should pick?

Thanks

Both of those are about as far away from the gym as you can get (though that's still only about 10-15 minutes max, anywhere to anywhere on campus really isn't that much hassle). The biggest problem with them in terms of going out 2-3 nights a week isn't so much the walk, it's the people. Lakeside has been described by a lot of people who lived there for first year, including my best friend, as dead. Not everyone has this experience but they do find it too quiet so you may not find the people there that you want to go out with 2-3 times a week. Obviously there are thousands of others to go out with not from your accommodation, but bear it in mind. Heronbank is a completely unknown quantity as this is the first year it's been available for first years, previously it was 3rd years / postgrads I think. So can't comment on how active that is. It's a shame Claycroft isn't for first years for the first time, as that would've been ideal for you.

I thought that you were only allowed to apply to one ensuite accommodation, but that might have changed...

Does anyone have any suggestions of places, apart from Heronbank or Lakeside for the 3rd choice.
What have others put down?
Also is Warwick's accomodation first come, first served?

Well your other options are (off the top of my head) Whitefields, Benefactors, Cryfield and Westwood.

Whitefields are halls dressed as houses essentially - there are 17 of them, each house about 12 people. They looked quite fun as far as I was concerned, I imagine it feels a bit Big Brothery at times but as long as there are good people in there I think Whitefields has the potential to be the most enjoyable halls. They're just in front of Rootes, so very close to the gym.

Benefactors only accommodates about 70 people (of which 48 are in shared rooms) so you'd be very unlikely to be put in there as a 3rd choice.

Cryfield is the cheapest - the atmosphere in there is supposed to be pretty good, but the rooms are very small (on the plus side it does have separate common rooms, unlike Rootes).

Westwood is roughly the same distance away from the all the central stuff as Lakeside and Heronbank - it treats itself as a bit of a separate community, though not in a way that isolates everyone from everything else. A lot of the sports facilities are on the Westwood campus, though not a gym as far as I know.

And accommodation isn't first come first served. As long as you've made your choices by July 31st you'll be fine.

though not a gym as far as I know.

Yeah, unfortuantely not. They really should put one there.

Although, if you dont mind paying £27.50 a month (probably more now) then you can go to fitness first behind tescos (2-3minute walk). Watch out, though, I unintentionally signed up for a 12 month contract.

Hey can someone help me to choose among Claycroft, Lakeside and Heronbank please. Ive been reading the forums for about an hr now and im yet to find highly useful information. I will be an MSc Finance and Economics student. Things important to me: close proximity to classes, supermarket, food places and the union, decent room size with quality facilities and a good enough social life on hall. Please help. Thx

Claycroft

Err, to be honest, those three are about the worst three residences on most of your criteria. Lakeside and Heronbank especially, are in close proximity to pretty much nothing; and none of the three are hugely reknown for their social life. (Not that it's not great to live there, it probably is, but they're far enough out that they seem quite... isolated).

Go with Claycroft, assuming you don't feel en-suite is essential (which frankly it isn't). Two minute walk to Tesco, probably the closest non-undergrad accommodation to the Union (although still a 5 minute walk, not exactly a disaster...), decent room size with good facilities as far as I'm aware.

westwood is right by all the sports stuff...and claycroft is miles from interest whitefields is where its at.

For postgrads, only Claycroft, Heronbank, Lakeside and Tocil are available.

Does anyone know what Tocil's like? It's cheap compared to the others. The photos make it seem nice inside, just small. I'm not sure if I want cheap or big just yet!

(Coming from London, I really don't care about the walk from any of these. Less than 15 minutes? That's nothing!)

Claycroft sounds the best, I think.

Heronbank and Lakeside are very quiet compared to the other 2. Thats all I reall have to say, but I doubt you would go wrong in either Tocil or CC. Maybe someone else on here might be able to answer better than me.

i'm thinking of applying for 3rd year on-campus. Could anyone say what are the differences between Heronbank and Lakeside. Both of them look like they were built about the same time and are both about the same distance away from Central Campus. So which would be the better choice? Thanks.

ok out of lakeside and heronbank go for heronbank! the rooms are amazing!
lakeside is really nice too but it's got more postgrads now.

Chances of getting on campus accommodation for a third year? Hmmmm...

I have a better question: Tocil or Redfern?!

I'm guarunteed on-campus accomodation in my 3rd year. Oh the joys of being abroad.

Me too! So... Heronbank is slightly better?

I'd pick Tocil. A friend lived in Redfern and tells me that kitchen sizes was extremely small. Redfern still better than Hurst though which is a mini Cryfield!

Reply 19

Yeah I don't really like Hurst. And I can't afford Heronbank, Lakeside or Claycroft. I'm tempted to go with Redfern because it has a sink in the bedroom and is slightly cheaper. I appreciated the sink in my room in Westwood a crazy amount last year...
