I currently have a Barclays account (not student).

I've been looking at other accounts, HSBC and Santander both offer good student account deals, whereas Barclays doesn't offer anything.

I don't really know how this works though - do i open a HSBC student account and keep my current Barclays account? Will i then have two accounts?

If so, I won't be using my Barclays account anymore, so do I just leave it there?

Yeah that's fine.
You can only have 1 student account but nothing wrong with having other current accounts

i would recommend using ur barclays current account for any income from part time jobs whilst at uni and use your hsbc/santander student account for the maintenance loan and have that as ur main account when buying clothes, food, etc.

Also maybe open up a savings account and have some of that money go in there?

Santander does an awesome Student Account! I've been with them for the last 2 years.

£1,500 Interest FREE Overdraft - Really good for when you need to pay rent but student finance doesn't arrive for another week or so.

Railcard, valid for 4 years - Good if you commute to Uni or travelling to and from Uni for holidays It's 33% off the train-fare, every little helps...

Potential to transfer to a £1,800 overdraft if you go on to do Postgraduate.

I use Santander for my student account, but also have a savings account and another current account with Natwest for part-time work, tax rebates etc. Basically anything not linked to Uni funds.
