Student Apathy

Poll

Are Students apathetic?

Please help me! I'm a final year student, producing a documentary on student apathy. What this effects in your life if you think you or someone else is apathetic, and what can be done about it? if anyone has views on this and would like to discuss, it would be really excellent, and who knows your views could appear in the documentary, which hopefully should be picked up by a television or internet company very soon! Please please discuss! Thanks xxx

Apathetic towards what or whom?

Apathetic towards their uni life, in particular the social aspects, where people can join in to a larger community, and get more involved with their surroundings. Coming from a small uni, we have no real sense of community, and am wondering how this unity can help combat apathy, or whether it is still apparent in students, of all types of universities. Thanks for showing an interest!

Personally, I'm not apathetic at all. I'm very enthusiastic about the university, and about uni life in general, and I get involved in as much as I can. I really care about the university and the way it's run, and I make the most of it.
However, I also know people who don't care at all other than turning up to lessons. There's a definite distinct group of students at UCLan (albeit a fairly large group) who get involved with everything (I'm one of them) and will be there WHATEVER you're doing. If I get asked to do something for the university, I could easily win money betting on the people I'd see there.
I think the only way to discourage apathy is to encourage interest. When I started at UCLan two years ago, I was one of VERY few people in my year (there's probably two or three of us) who took a real interest in everything. However, I've spent a lot of time here on TSR and on other student websites, offering advice etc. to new students, and I've been told by a few that started in September that their enthusiasm for the university started from seeing how enthusiastic I was about the place. One person can influence many others, whether intentional or not.

You have probably done a lot to aid uni recruitment and not been paid a single penny for it (excluding open days)

A lot of it isnt apathy, it is bad advertising. Here at Newcastle there appears to be a feeling that they can bring the cow to water but not force it to drink. But my argument is that if you are shouting at the cow from behind a wall, it is not going to know what is going on. There seems to be a position of making students find out for themselves what is on offer, rather than offering it to them on the plate where they are (lectures and halls of residence)

So much could be achieved if the union went out towards students. It has a newspaper, website, leaflets, but nothing beats an enthusiastic person answering questions knowledgably.

Other factors include the sheer amount of work students get, other commitments (such as jobs and families) and rivals to students activities like bars and independent pub crawls

Agree with the last bit completely, and I agree that they could publicise things much more too. Still though, I guess it's still apathy if people aren't handed things on a plate, so won't go and look for it?

that's exactly right if things are handed to them as clear as day then most people won't go looking for things which i think is a very sad situation to be in and apathy in one of it's purest forms. Would any of you be interested in seeing the short documentary when it is finished, I would love some feedback from impartial people!

I'd love to get involved in political type thingies like marches and stuff like they used to at unis in the 70s, but I don't think it goes on as much nowadays.

I would say im very apathetic towards uni, i wasnt in the first year so much but now i've had enough, i cant wait to get out and go into the world of work. Uni bores me, students annoy me, i feel too old to be doing lectures and the student union side i have no interest in, i dont care about student elections either..so yeh im pretty apathetic lol

I'm quite interested in this topic, actually. At university, I was surprised how few took up involvement in societies, debates, attending university events, or writing in student publications etc.

I've also got plenty of ideas for combating it. Just a shame it's all weeks too late, eh?

I just stay up all night on the internet and sleep during the day. It's apathetic all right.
