HYGINE working with food

I understand working with food you aren't allowed nail polish and I totally get that rule. However I have natural long nails and don't wish to sacrifice this for a job, but I have been told in order to work my nails must be short (no longer than fingers end length) is this the law or something I can challenge? I have been super looking forward to working here and through my training nothing was said about the length of my nails till today.
I don't know about food hygiene but are you sure you are actually excited and want to start this job, because if it was something you really wanted to do wouldn't you be willing to sacrifice long nails?
I am excited and want to start the job but i have had natutal long nails my whole life so (dramatic I kmow) but its kinda part of me and I feel it's silly for any minimum wage job to expect you to change your hair length or nail length to comply unless it's legal requirement
