Private accommodation help

Hey guys, i'm about to start my first year at Exeter and apparently I didn't get into university accommodation which I am still really annoyed about at the moment and was wondering what your thoughts on private is.

I looked up the accommodation website for details on private and they give you a bunch of link to different companies that organised private accommodation here's the list:

==========================================
[*]Campus Living Villages (Point Exe and King Edward Studios)
[*]Collegiate (Clifton Place, Dean Clark Lofts, Isca Lofts*, Library Lofts*, Picturehouse Apartments* and West Gate*)
[*]CRM Students (Atlas House*, Iron Bridge Studios* and Verney Street Studios)
[*]Downing Students (The Kingfisher)
[*]East of Exe (The Leat*)
[*]Fresh Student Living (Cricket Field Court, Queen Street Studios and The Barn*)
[*]Homes for Students (Exeter One)
[*]Platform_ (Platform_ Exeter)
[*]UNITE Students (Northernhay, Northfield and Exeter Trust House)
[*]Host (The Printworks)
[*]Vita Students (Portland House*)

============================================

and each of the link shows like 10 different accommodation types so i'm really lost for what to pick when applying, and i'm hoping you guys can give some pointers to which are the good ones/bad ones pros and cons. I was looking for a single en-suite uni accommodation so anything that is similar to that is fine for me, I don't want it to be too expensive, but not extremely cheap and dirty either, if there is something that is medium in price and quality compared to the uni accommodation equivalent would be great. Also i'll have to factor in accessibility to campus e.g distance too, I ideally want it to be really close to the university like a max 10min bike ride.

There's just too many options for me to sort through so I hope you guy's' experiences or knowledge on the matter will help guide me in the right direction for this. Feel free to say which sites/organisations are the ones you would/wouldn't suggest applying for and opinions are appreciated!

Thanks! D7E

Unusually high number of good reviews.

use google map to see location, id the ones in your price range and then you are going to have to google any reviews or keep asking on here which are the good student halls. You can also use the search feature to see whether anyone has said anything in the past about the hall.

You can also ask accommodation if they have any student events where people meet and try to find fellow students that are looking for a house share together.

I've been doing your searching and your sites are really helpful, but I'm wondering if any private accommodation has CATERED now. If anyone knows if there are any private accommodation in exeter that has catering that would be great!

Never heard of it

Much better to do your own food and choose what and when to eat. It is rare even in uni accommodation.

Why would you prefer catered? it would be much more expensive?
Cant you cook? lots of students cant but they learn and there are tons of places around uni as well.

Would you be interested in moving into a student House share?

Hi there!

My name is Laura and I am a student ambassador at the University of Exeter. Sorry to hear you did not get into on-campus accomodation, but as you already saw there are plenty of options for private accomodation in town.

For the most part they work in the same way as university accomodation, except they will rarely offer a standard room, most are en-suites or studios. For the en-suite option you will likely share a flat with 6-8 people and with a studio you have your own kitchen and bathroom. The great thing about private accomodation is there is always a common room with entertainment and you are close to town. Also, for pretty much wherever you are in town it is unlikely that it will take you more than 10min by bike and 15-20 min walking to campus.

I lived in Printworks (https://host-students.com/locations/exeter/the-printworks/) and the Barn (https://www.thisisfresh.com/exeter/the-barn) and I loved them both. I honestly prefered being closer to town, but even for walking to campus it was only 15 minutes!

There are a bunch of other options you can choose from based on the location, prices, room type. I would suggest looking into Printworks, the Barn, the Depot, Picturehouse, Clifford house and Central Living. There are however a lot more options if you google private accomodation in Exeter you will find plenty. Again, prices might be a bit higher than standard rooms offered on campus, however in some of them you also have a gym or movie rooms which are all included in the price.

As I said I lived in the Printworks (one bedroom apartment) and the barn (en-suite) so if you are interested in any of these let me know and I can give some more details!

I hope this helps!

Hi

I have been offered a place in clearing at Exeter for med sci ( so study on both campuses). I am not sure if i will get university accomodation at this stage so was wondering whether to be proactive and find private accomodation rather than wait and see. Is anywhere good for freshers in private accomodation? I don't want to miss out on the social side but equally am concerned I won't be offered on campus accomodation anyway even if i wait and see.

Any advice welcome and if anyone else is in a similar situation where are you considering?

TIA

Hello Anonymous #2,

Congratulations on your offer from us, we look forward to welcoming you in September. Firstly, I would definitely recommend applying for our university accommodation if you haven't already, our accommodation team are working hard to ensure that you'll hear back from them on the 24th of August, so later this week.

Whilst you are waiting you can of course look at private accommodation options too, I actually lived in private accommodation (halls) in my second and third year. Under our website, there is lots of advise about private student accommodation, giving you three different options. One being "Purpose Built Student Accommodation", the second "Residential and Shared Accommodation" and the third "Residential Landlords and Host Families".

I would recommend having a look under the "Purpose Built Student Accommodation", here for some more detail as this is similar, if not identical, to the experiences you would have at our campus accommodation. I can give you a list of popular private accommodation's we have in Exeter, to give you peace of mind when you are searching!

1.

The Printworks, which is almost in the middle of both campus', closer to St Luke's but only 15/20 mins from Streatham, 5 mins to town.

2.

The Depot, again almost in the middle of both campus', closer to St Luke's but only 15/20 mins from Streatham, 5 mins to town.

3.

NorthernHay House, which is right in the centre of town, 12 mins to St Luke's and about 20/25 to Streatham.

4.

The Northfield, much closer to Streatham and St David's station, maybe 25/30 mins to St Luke's.

I would recommend if you are applying for these accommodations to write under special requests that you would prefer to live with first year students' or maybe even second year, just so you have that reassurance.

Good luck with your search!

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

Best, Sophie University of Exeter Student Ambassador.
