B&Q threatening bad reference

So i want to quit my job and they recommend me sign a resignation letter and not return, but then they say they may not give me a good reference in the future.

Surely a reference is purely based on work performance and they can't give me a bad one just because i want to leave.

Can anyone give me advice / tips on what to say to them? thanks in advance ladies and gents
A reference has to be true and based on your work performance as you say, it is illegal for them to write a bad reference about you if this is not the truth. Who is threatening to give you a bad reference if you quit? Is there someone else who can write a reference for you (be it at B and Q or somewhere else)?
Write up an official notice of resignation, stating your name, your managers name, the company and date you hand it in. You must also state when you intend to leave (read your contract to check the notice period). If you work the required noticed period they can't give you a bad reference.
