Are quotation marks/dashes allowed in a personal statement?

Hi there guys, i'm writing my personal statement and want to know if using quotation marks (single ones) like 'great' and dashes between words like first-aid are allowed on the statement and if they'll be filtered out or anything by ucas.

quotation marks are okay but think about if you really need to use them as that uses up characters.
