btec nationls, what are unit points? and how does it effect ur overall score?

im currently doing btec national award in public services, i am doing 6 units this year and i was told by my lecture that i will have to get merits in all 6 units to achive an overall merit grade, then i found this webpage on the edexcel site

http://www.edexcel.org.uk/VirtualContent/72760/RYA_Nationals.pdf

now it seems if i want to get an overall merit grade i will have to get enough unit points to get an overall merit, so i did some calculations and found out i only need to get 4 merits and 2 pass in my units to gian enough points for an overall merit. am i right?????

(by the way each unit is 60 Guided learning hours)

hope i dint confused u because i am confused myself.

Each unit is given a grade and a score

A Pass gets you 2 points
A Merit gets you 4 points
and
A Distinction gets you 6 points

There will be different point boundaries for each overall grade

For your course, I would assume that the point boundaries are:

Pass - 12-18 Points
Merit - 20-30 Points
Distinction - 32-42 Points

Don't forget that one of your units is Externally Assessed, and worth double points (4, 8, and 12 for Pass, Merit, and Dist, respectively)

There are many different combinations to getting a Merit overall, such as

4 Merits (excluding External Unit) = 16 Points
2 Passes (One of these being the External Unit) = 6 Points

Which would equal 22 points

Seems to be the simplest way to go about it

Getting Merits in every unit would give you 28 Points, which, again is still an overall Merit.

To get the Distinction, you would need a combination such as

2 Distinctions (One of these being the Externally Assessed Unit) = 18 Points
3 Merits = 12 Points
1 Pass = 2 Points

Total of 32 Points, which is the borderline of an Overall Distinction

just wondering, the link i posted is a very different grading system in terms of points,
each unit points goes like this
pass 6 points
merit 12 points
distinctions 18 points

to get an overall pass u need to get 36 points
to get an overall merit u need 60 points
to get an overall distinction u need 84 points

apprently this is the 2007 version of the specification

so has anyone started their course sept 2007? i still remain confused

Well it's still a similar system, just different points

You complete 6 units, and for each you get a score.

It would probably be easiest to just stick with going for mostly Merits, if your aiming for a Merit overall anyway, and you could probably get away with 1 or 2 passes.

Hi, could someone tell me.
I did a first diploma which I no is Equivelent to 4 GCSE's
I have did my first yr of BTEC NATIONAL and on my units I got 5 merits and 4 passes. this was for different Units, e.g Media production, web design
so for some classes merits in the work and others passes. 5 merits and 4 passes.
How many points would that be worth overall for this year alone?
That would be great!
Thanks Cat!
