I’ve just started my A level courses (English Language, Classical Civilisation, Psychology and History) and would like to do something to do with linguistics and/or child development at uni.
However, I’m not sure if these need more of a scientific set of subjects!!
Please can you let me know what would be a good course, and if I would get in.

I got 8,8,8,7,7,7,7,6,5 at GCSEs.

Teaching is an obvious choice- an English and Linguistics degree would equip you well for either primary or secondary school teaching. Speech and Language therapy is also something you might want to look at - it can be done either as a degree or as a post grad course. Your English and Psychology A levels match Leeds Beckett's requirements for example.

There is a very high chance that you would be accepted by many universities (based on your gcses but universities look at many other stuff).
If you want to study languages at uni you should study a language at A level not just English. (my friend studied 4 languages at A level to study modern languages at uni)
For child development, psychology is a great choice but in my opinion if you study biology with psychology it would be better.
I had a quick look at some unis to see if they had a degree that would teach languages and something related to child development but i couldn't find anything.
If you cant decide between the two you should change Classical Civilisation to a language.
But dont base your choices on my opinion (im not an expert at this stuff). In addition, i always tell people not to study a subject that they don't need. In this case you don't need to study history. (some people find it hard to study for 4 A levels but i knew someone who studied 6 A levels and got very good results for all his subjects)

Thanks for the replies- teaching is something I’ve looked at but I’d prefer not to if that makes sense!!
I think I might have confused things with linguistics- I meant to refer to Psychology and linguistics combined courses

I think Warwick do a combined Psychology with Linguistics. Speech & Language Therapy would be idea if you want to mix linguistics and child development. Or go in to research in this field (of which there are plenty of opportunities, since we don't reeeeeally know how we learn to talk)

You could do a masters in something more specialised (child psychology, cognitive development, pyscholinguistics, cognitive science) if you did a BA in linguistics or psychology.

I'm a single hons Linguistics student, so happy to answer any questions
