I really like the MB, but do think that Alistair has hit the nail on the head; m. fielding is the weak link in the show, the way he plays the character does not fit with the rest of the show at all.

To be honest, I think I've grasped a point which IS there. I find his character funny, because of the wooden acting etc etc, therefore his acting (or non acting, in your opinion) is funny, in my opinion.

And maybe he's such a good actor, that he makes playing a character who is meant to be played badly seem so realistic, and so he comes across as a bad actor, due to his amazing skills. Didn't consider that, did you? :p:

Erm...I don't think he makes the character appear realistic though. Are you saying that he is such an amazing actor that he is actually able to make it seem like he is a ***** actor, and convince me that he can't act, when actually he can? If this is what he's doing, then a) he's a damn fine actor and b) what's the point?

But really, just because you don't find him funny, doesn't mean he's a rubbish actor or that he shouldn't have been cast. Comedy is very subjective, and while Naboo fits my idea of comedy, he doesn't fit yours. I don't see why you think it's such a big issue though, or why you think it should be changed. Surely you've watched other comedies where you've not found the acting or the jokes or the characters as funny as other people do? I think Only Fools and Horses is shockingly poor, but it's repeatedly at the top of lists of "top 100 comedies" and the like.. Maybe your Naboo is like my Only Fools and Horses

But the actors in only fools are actually expressive and funny. Whether or not you actually like the show, you cannot deny that they put some effort in. Michael Fielding seems to have been chosen regardless of whether or not he can act, simply because he is Noel's brother. I don't understand why they'd have him playing just one character if he could. Imagine his faux-wooden version of the Hitcher; how riveting that would be.

Comments are above, in bold

Yep, I was saying that he's a great actor who is able to convince you that he can't act because he's so good at acting :p: I have no proof for that, of course!!

And with the Only Fools thing, I really don't see them putting effort in. I appreciate other people enjoy it, I just don't.

I can see I won't persuade you otherwise anyway :p: Each to their own, maybe you should run out the room everytime Naboo appears on screen or something!!

Half the people in the Mighty Boosh are only there because they're friends and relatives - so what, it adds to the raw, stick-on-a-costume nature of the show. And personally I think the character of Naboo is supposed to be like that - but even if he wasn't, it's clear that they stuck with it because it adds a different dimension. Plus, Noel Fielding does the whole "sounds like its a script" sort of monologue a lot of the time anyway!

I think Naboo is meant to be like that. And mike seems quite laid back in real life too, so that makes it all the better.
I doubt anyone watches the Boosh to see the latest up an coming best actors anyway.

I haven't honestly watched that much of the Mighty Boosh, but from what I have watched I assumed that Naboo was always drugged up on various drug cocktails and that Michael Fielding's portrayal was purposely wooden so as to make it seem like Naboo was simply a presence?

Of course his name "Naboo the Enigma" could suggest that his non-acting style is all part of the mystery of Naboo.

Either that or I'm talking utter crap.

I know this thread is nearly a decade old, but I couldn't resist replying. The point, which is correct, about Naboo's nonchalance adding to the humour is made most stark by Michael's delivery of the line, "What happened was this fox came in and farted and Vince lost consciousness", from 'The Strange Tale of the Crack Fox'. The massive contrast between the content of the line and the delivery make it far more funny than if they matched up.

I completely agree with you Alas TTTair, baby. I'm bamboozled that anyone could enjoy his pathetic appearances in this otherwise entertaining show. He sucks the comedy out of every scene he's in. Definitely not intentional, just crap acting and unfunny screen persona. Sorry I'm 10 years behind on this discussion, by reading the thread it sounds like you could have used some backup!

I'm a huge Boosh fan, but does anyone else feel that Michael Fielding is an awful actor and shouldn't even be in the show? It's obvious that he's only in there because he's Noel's brother, but I genuinely feel that he lets down the show. He has no expression in his voice and slurs everything (I'm not even mentioning his weird lisp as that's obviously not his fault).
I couldn't imagine any other actors playing Noel or Julian's roles, but I can think of loads of better people who could play Naboo.
Does anyone else feel this way?

I agree with everything you're saying, except I love it all. It's like Noel shouted "Ma can I make a TV show!" And she shouted back "just bring your brother along" "but he doesn't want to go!" "Bring him anyway!" It makes it even better that he never acted again.
