GEM UCAS reference

Hi All,

I'm applying for graduate medicine for 2019. The medical schools requires an academic reference for the UCAS form however I graduated a long time ago (over 9 years ago) so I don't really have a suitable academic reference. I've contacted the med schools I'm applying to and explained my circumstances and the answers I've got (so far) are:

1. we'll accept a reference from a voluntary placement
2. we really want an academic reference so do everything you can to get one
3. we'll accept a work reference

I'm not sure how to proceed as they seem to have different requirements! Has anyone else had any similar issues regarding the UCAS reference and if so what did you do?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
