Do you feel safe living in Birmingham and attending Birmingham University?

I want to study Biomedical Science at Birmingham University because I love the university campus and the course. However, because I have lived in a rural area all my life, I am worried that I won't feel safe living in such a big city.
Is there a high crime rate? I saw that crime rates were high in Selly Oak, is this true?

2 weeks ago I moved from a tiny village in the middle of the woods where no one lives to Birmingham where I am attending BCU. I've had no problem so far and feel completely safe...
