Don't know if this answers your question, but as they consist of carbon and hydrogen bonds, they are (highly) flammable, biohazardous to the airways and hazardous to environment - according to the alkanes themselves.

Covalent compounds cross the blood-brain barrier easily, as the brain is a fatty covalent-type environment due to high percentage of lipids. Once there alkanes can interfere with good functionality of the brain's reactions.
