Hey I was just wondering how competitive UCL when applying for economics? What GCSE's/A levels would you probably need to be considered? Thanks in advance for any feedback it's really appreciated

They turned me down with 11A*'s and 4A prediction (inc Further Maths and Econ)

It is quite a competitive course and UCL is quite highly regarded for economics.

Typical offer AAA at A-Level
Maths A-Level is required.
Gcse I'd recommend a few A*'s at least.

predicted 3As at A2; ABB (then, now AAA) at AS. REJECTED!

Probs my personal statement that did me in, citing the KKK in an application is never a wise move huh?

How'd you manage to slip that in there?!

Perhaps, but that probably wasn't because they didn't think you were academically capable. By the sounds of it your subjects could have been a little but more varied. What was your PS like?

UCL, along with LSE, Durham, Bristol and the like are very competitive. Economics at LSE and UCL especially. But please remember they base their offers on more than academic abilities.

I think you need: -

AAA at A level (including maths). Plus another AS level in addition to the usual GCSE requirements (C in English and Maths).

cool thanks for all the feedback I was thinking of doing economics, maths, chemistry and geography in 6xth form does that sound an alright combination?

That's not bad. Good to have an art subject there, especially one as flexible as geography. I don't think economics is necessarily needed. Infact, another solid anayltical art subject (such as English) or maybe a science could replace it. But, if that's what you are comfortable with, it seems good enough.

Edit: - Are you planning on doing all four to A2?

yup not to sure about what to drop at the end of the year though :/ which ones to do you think I should carry on to A2?

Very.

Three As at A-level minimum, very good interview technique, and lot of A*s. Minimum, really.

Interview? You're very unlikely to get an interview at UCL for Economics L100; they hardly interview anyone.

KKK = Ku Klux Klan.

OP: It's very hard and don't underestimate the importance of the personal statement.

I pulled the (not so) smart move of quoting Freakonomics - basically I threw in a one liner about a comparison they drew between estate agents and the KKK only surviving through asymmetric information or something in that vein. XD

THOUGH, I think its how I got my Bristol offer - the speaker at the open day mentioned the book and talked a bit about their points and econometrics.

GET IN THERE! lol

(I got rejected by LSE UCL and Nottingham, who obviously aren't openminded enough to have a klansman amongst their ranks)

You may or may not have a point there. :s-smilie:

My PS was ok - good enough to get the LSE and Warwick offers. What I meant to say was that there is always an element of luck... sometimes, they will reject you because of weird and unexplainable reasons. I didnt get any feedback, apart from the generic mail (which I quoted to them before I got their feedback - so my message wasnt even read :O)!

That's right. When you don't have the chance of an interview your PS is your only chance to communicate with the admissions tutor. Make good use of it.

Entirely up to you. It depends on your strengths and weakness'. You've got a year so just see how it goes. Other people on here would know better than I do, but is it necessary to do both maths and economics through to A2? Maths is but I think economics may be a good one to drop there. It will be good to have a solid science A-level, so try and keep chemistry. Geography's good to keep, it's an excellent an interesting subject, very flexible and desirable (both art and science).

It's entirely up to you but you must keep maths though, that's obvious.

Dropping Economics for A2 if you're applying for Economics at university is unlikely to come across well...

You have to do Maths until A2. Further Maths would be useful.

You don't have to do Economics, although ~80% of people on the course did.

Maths, Econ, Chem and Geog is a decent enough combination.
I don't understand why people like dropping a subject at A2, they're all such a piss-take and people doing only 3 just end up wasting free periods throwing paper aeroplanes, playing tetris, or masturbating, but if you had to drop one, lose Geog.

Yes. I mean I didn't even do the extra AS (I dropped it in the January) and that's all I did. Sit in the middle of the common room and masturbate two hours more each week

Why geography? It's a solid subject and very flexible. It'll be good to have at least one art there, despite what poor perceptions people have of them.

Still, it's the student's decision to make.
