Picking a topic to speak about on Training Contract/Vacation Scheme applications.

Hi guys,

I'm making a push for vac schemes and training contracts and was just wondering how you all go about selecting topics to speak about in applications.

"Introduce us to a topic you know about and explain why it interests you."

I have a list of 'conventional' (typical?) topics - Brexit, Technology impacting the profession etc, and a list of not-so conventional topics (obviously application appropriate  ) which I'm happy to disclose privately. I'm fairly sure that the not-so conventional topics would set me apart but I'm worried about whether I'd be going in a direction a large city law firm (top 50ish, bar magic circle) cares for.

My question is which category of topic would you go for and your reasons behind that choice.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response, Johan.

It makes a lot of sense to pick a topic relevant to the firm in question - did you have a personal interest in these topics beforehand? Or did you go for the topic based on the particular firm's specialism?
I have also seen this question on an application and I am struggling to approach it, would it be best to focus upon a legal or current affairs issue related to the firm in question or to focus upon something i am genuinely passionate about such as the imbalances in european football, any advice would be helpful
thought as much although some originality doesn't always go amiss, is it in your opinion necessary to actually relate it to the firm using their name explicitly ?

Whilst obviously a key issue for right now, during my applications this year I definitely got the sense that some interviewers/HR depts were getting a little fed up of seeing Brexit when asked for discussion of an issue. I think there's a lot more you could talk about that would maybe make you stand out from the crowd a little.

Hey, I'm struggling with the same question this year. What did you guys finally write about and were you successful in the application stage. It would help greatly. Thanks in advance!
