I want info about Telford Hall!!!!

Hi, my name is JIn, starting this late september..studying IMBS.
Im considering of choosing Bill Mo and Telford...
I know a lot about Bill Mo now..after checking their websites..however..Telford does not have one..so I dont know how it is to be in that hall..the atmosphere..people..social life, etc. any help?
I only know that it is hard to get in, most of the people there are unconditional, gap year and international..

cheers,
Jin

Telford - sporty, lots of gap year students, very small hall (I think the smallest) but, as you rightly said, very much in demand due to its position. For your subject, really both halls are pretty good location - Bill Mo is nice inside, new, but out of the village. Depends if you are looking to keep to yourself or be a party animal?

im not really a party guy..or am i??haha
anyways..oh..telford is small..if i look at the location then i would say telford...if the atmosphere then bill mo..
does gap year mean mature..i mean are there many mature students in Telford??

IMBS is all over campus as well, so you'll have to do some walking regardless of hall =) the department is in the library though... so Elvyn is well located for it. just my 2 cents.
It's a different set of people in halls each year. A socially vibrant hall this year maybe not be so vivacious the year after. Anywhichway, all the halls have good entertainment value, and there isn't too much to distinguish them (Elvyn sucks though :P Kidding!)

Saying that, I would base you're choice on criteria like location, price, unite/imago, room types? etc etc. Stuff that's constant.

Finally, If I was in your position I would choose Harry French.
halls are very different year to year.

last year in the holt was apparently a very good year according to the warden , which is why to the returners this year it may seem quite dull because the people have changed and aren't the same as last year.

Nah it doesn't mean mature - well they will have had a one year break usually - so 19. Its just full of them because they are generally deferred entry so can get first choice.

hmm..just like me then:smile:

Harry French??!!
hmm..I didnt want Harry French for some reason..but i forgot:smile:
it was either too expensive, or had to share room with someone..
why are you in Harry French?

it's alrite if i have to walk..the campus itself is not that big..

You're right, there's next to no information on Telford. I don't know why. It might have something to do with us being a small hall maybe. I'm in Telford this year. It's small, but trust me it's lively enough. I think the people who have been elected next years comittee will want to make sure it stays that way too.

If you're into sports its quite a good choice, seeing as there are a lot of sporty people about and loads of things to get involved with. If you're not though don't worry, I'm not into sports at all and I'm managing.

William Morris is fairly close to the union if you run out of milk or wanna get a few Strongbows in or something, but they recently opened a little mini-mart and takeaway just behind Telford to replace one that burnt down last summer that stocks pretty much everything you'd want from a convenience store. It's really proving to be quite handy.

If you read the accomodation guide and it tries to tell you Telford has a recently refurbished common room, don't listen! It's all lies! The pool table is torn, the table football doesn't work (I don't think...) and it's generally a bit of a mess. But I wouldn't worry too much, because a) no one spends time in common rooms generally, it's all just a "lets pile in so-and-sos room/kitchen" job and b) I think the comittee were working on redoing it. Not sure how far they took that.

As a hall, it's quite nicely arranged. There are generally quite a few blocks of around 10, 11 or 12 people (I'm in one of these). I wouldn't say these were QUIET, but they are a lot more personal. Which I really like to be honest with you. There are a couple of really big blocks with three stories and around 10 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) people on each floor. But it's not a case of being from a block and staying in it constantly. There is an incredible ammount of "inter-block" mingling, and your Students Union card will get you into anyone's block until 10:30 at night.

I'm not sure what IMBS is... But location-wise Telford is a pretty solid choice. Not too far from the union at all, not far from the library and you're within shouting distance of the friends you make in the Student Village. Oh, and the EHB is only down the road, which is a great place to unwind playing a game of pool (with GOOD tables, not like the common room, and I think it's only about 60p) and grab a burger and a Blackthorn. The burgers are actually really good. I'm doing Industrial Design and Technology, and it's still not far from the Bridgeman centre, probably about a 10 to 15 minuite walk depending on how I'm feeling. Luffs gym is only a stones throw away as well (literally under a minuite walk from my block).

Room sizes... Well I've only been in the ensuite blocks, but they're pretty decent if you ask me. I'd say my room is bigger than my friends over a William Morris, even if their en-suites are bigger (and a tad nicer if I'm honest) than ours. Kitchens are big enough. (It'd be nice if people cleaned up after themselves, but I wouldn't say that's a Telford only problem )

Overall, a small hall, but quite close knit. Good location. I think I've covered most things. Feel free to ask anything else.

Whichever you apply to, Bill Mo or Telford, they're both great halls with good and bad points. I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever you choose . I wouldn't mind being in either.
Being in Telford will give you a pretty central location (so a 5-10min walk to most places), whereas in Bill Mo you are right by the Union with a 10min walk to James France and about a 20min to MechEng area (obviously this all varies from which block you are in/how fast you walk etc before people start saying they can do it in 5min!)

I did IMBS for a year and have known people on it, in general most lectures are going to be in James France/Mech Eng with tutorials in the Library - though in my year we had a random one down by Towers, so if you are wanting to be near to lectures Telford would be a better choice.

Bill Mo has become *very* popular, i think it's around 3000 freshers applied for it last year (think the hall has 467 rooms) and about 750 returners applied this year (with only 130 rooms available) - not sure if it'll be the same for next year due to the new halls being built but just thought i'd mention it as now it's just as tough to get into Bill Mo as it was to get into Telford

I'm in Bill Mo and i love it, though if i had to pick another hall i'd probably go to Telford - lol, probably not being much help here! In terms of rooms, tbh not that much difference - just that Bill Mo has just been refurbished if that is an important factor to you :p:

Our very own Lc will give her opinion once she sees this thread...
haha:smile:
thank you!!

I always wondered about the 2 companies/providers. Does your hall provider make a difference in any ways?

Unite is an external company off site. Imago deal with the halls on Loughborough campus.
does unite=upp?
or is upp just the owner and maintainer of hals while imago is the manager of them?

The only thing I can say about Telford Hall, is that when I watched the Fresher's Fortnight videos on the union website they seemed to be the loudest and most drunk.

The song "BARMY ARMY TELFORD HALL" goes through my head every day for some reason, which is quite annoying!

How have you jumped to that conclusion?
