Dead social life at uni's?

I keep being told not to apply to places like Durham or Warwick because supposedly I "will get very bored as there is nothing there"

But is that not true for most top unis? People make it seem like the only interesting place is London but I already live there so I want to try somewhere new...

Which Russel Group universities have a good social scene or if anyone can speak from experience where have you found to be a great city to go to uni?
My friend goes to Durham and she loves it. Has a lot of social events.
I personally go to a small uni in the middle of nowhere so can't help from personal experience.

what uni do u go to??
Maybe consider Cardiff? I don't go there myself but I went for an open day and the city seemed quite nice.
