Hi guys,

I'm not from UK and I'm thinking to take a OU BSc, but I cannot understand the mechanism of the marks and other related things: what do honors mean? What does it mean 2:1 or 2:2 or similar notations that sometime I find?

Thanks so much!

So honours degree grades are split into 3 classes (1st 2nd and 3rd), the highest grade you can achieve is a 1st. The 2nd class is split again into 2 grades, a 2:1 and a 2:2, (2:1 is higher) Then if you don’t achieve a 3rd, you don’t get an honours degree but may achieve a pass depending on the institution, but this isn’t for a full degree (and is sometimes a fail) - hope this helps

Basically the above.

It could also (crudely) be thought of as.

1st= A
2:1 B
2:2 C

Basically (almost) all degrees awarded by UK universities are "honours", even if a course doesn't mention it.

Have you got a specific question we can help with? The wiki page (google 'British degree') seems to have everything pretty clearly explained...
