is this an error in mass spectometry
on the aqa chemistry spec (a-level) it says that positive ions gain a proton for electrospray ionisation in order to produce a positive ions. Isn't this wrong because if the ion gains a proton then a new element is formed?

pls help in trying to explain this

Asked teacher, the proton is actually just a H Ion, so it is added as a compound and not directly to the element. For instance, if you are ionising Mg, it wouldn't become Al, it instead would become a MgH compound. You are not directly adding the proton to the element. Of course, the H gains an electron later, making the whole thing neutral again.
