There are mistakes in my teacher reference

Preface -

If you have not seen your entire UCAS form (including teacher references, which may have been withheld from you by your school/college), then I would strongly advise you to get a copy of your entire UCAS form.

A copy of your entire UCAS form (including teacher references) can be obtained from UCAS for a fee of £10 - read this link for further details:
UCAS Data Protection

People make mistakes, and there may be mistakes on your UCAS form - even in the teacher references. Such mistakes may [unwittingly] weaken your application.

...

- My online form was processed by UCAS on 20/9. Therefore I presume my UCAS form has been replicated and sent to the six universities of my choosing.

- Today, on receiving a data protection copy of my UCAS form, I discovered the following mistakes on the teacher reference:

1. My prediction and reference for History A-level is just not there!
2. My prediction and reference for Economics A-level is just not there!
3. I have been given a prediction and reference for Maths A-level - which would be cool - but I don't do Maths A-level! (It seems to be instead of Economics).

What do I do (other than swear blind revenge on the cretin(s) responsible for this clerical error)? :frown:

Sorry to hear that :frown:

Are you sure you're teachers have sent 'your' referance? From what's missing (and the additional info) it sounds like the referance is someone elses.
LS.

Cheers for the reply.

For the two A-level references which are accurate (English Lit and Geography) it's pretty clear that it's 'my reference'. Frankly, I don't know wtf is going on with the rest though! Sorry for sounding a tad pissed off, and I'm not angry at you obvs - but how the hell did I get a reference + prediction for Maths?!

Does anybody know if there's anything that can be done to correct my references now?

I would take your copy and see your Head of Sixth Form on Monday morning and ask him/her to check its accuracy. If they have sent the wrong ref, then they should be able to do something about it, pronto. If they have it might be worth contacting UCAS by email to tell them that you think there has been a clerical error and for them NOT to send it out to Unis until your school has rectified the situation. (It will take longer for your school to get into gear on this, so a holding email on your part might help!) If, as you suggest, its already gone to your Unis, then UCAS should be able to re-send a NEW version, if the school submits a new one. If not then I think the school ought to email the 6 admissions tutors directly to explain the situation and to send a copy of your new ref.

Are you sure?

Dont be sorry for it, you need to get angrier. March in monday and bloody strangle the CRETIN who has made this error. I suggest you then either make your referee or the person who appended your reference write a letter to send to all your universities. This needs to include your subject and its ref no. as well as your ucas application number. I have already had to make up for three clerical errors, but not about reference....

Hope that helps. Anger helps.

That sounds like a nightmare, all I can offer is my sympathy

Morally, yes. If they umm and err about it, I would contact the unis admissions tutors quoting my UCAS number and course and ensure that they know that there is something incorrect on the form - It should be obvious because you have put down your exams to be taken... and this will not match up with the predicted grades and subjects.

Thanks for the reply. I guess there's nothing I can do until Monday.

Do you know whether my form will have to be 're-processed' by UCAS? I'm worried because the Oxford deadline is just around the corner - and I don't want to shoot myself in the foot. :frown:

Yes, I'm of the view that they should do this - at least out of courteousy!

And to think I wouldn't have known about this, had I not requested a data protection copy of my form from UCAS. Grrrrr.

If you have applied to Oxbridge, then it is VITAL that this is sorted out on Monday morning. Don't leave your Head of Sixth Form's office until it is!

This is f****** crazy, a friend of mine's predicted grades were aaa and one the referee 'accidentally' put it to aac. It's stupid how they make mistakes with something as important as this.

Should I get my parents to write a letter?

Before Monday I still think you could contact UCAS yourself and let them know that there is a problem

Get your parents to talk to your teachers or whoever is in charge of ucas forms, by phone or in real person. You don't have time to write a letter.

Indeed. Take your parents in with you on Monday morning!

If you have any problems with your school, make a scene; Tell them you'll contact the local paper. I know it seems drastic, but with some schools, it's the only way you can make them listen.

It's your future, don't let your school stand in the way of that.

I suppose I could write them an email so that it's dealt with first thing on Monday.

I forget to ask another thing: I do General Studies A2 and yet there is no mention of it on my teacher reference - am I meant to have a predicted grade for General Studies?

Possibly, but since most Unis don't use it as part of their offers, its not needed. i assume you put it on your list of exams to be taken?

It makes me wonder whether this whole debacle is down to pure incompetence - or worse - somebody trying to **** me over!

It just goes to show how ridiculous it is that my school prohibits students from seeing their references. The mistakes are absolutely idiotic, but I've got to love the part where it says "Rob scored an excellent 289/300 in Maths" - that would never happen in a million years, lol.
