Yes I do mean society. Marx was a proto-sociologist and class struggle is fundamental to his view of what drove human societies.

Workers formed and would have continued forming unions and engaging in class struggle regardless of what Marx wrote. He oberved society and came up with his own thoeries. Pretty much everyone is now a historical materialist in some way or another when it comes to history. The reason these things have been talked about before is largely down to people like Marx.

We got the weekend becuase labourers and artisans wanted an extra day to engage in and recover from drinking. ANd we could extend the weekend by learning from and engaging in some more class struggle. :beer:

Marx was quite definitely no hack, or meager sociologist. If you're going to criticism Marx at least give him his due, he was a philosopher, who combined the best of the 3 great schools of European thought: English economics, German philosophy and French political theory. There was a whole lot of thought going on before him, but it was Marx that drew the threads together into a coherent philosophy that could understand the world and consequently change it.

A lot of what Marx did was what we would now call sociology is what I was saying.
