Should I switch now or wait till the end of this year?

Hey all,

I'm a first year aero engineering student at a Scottish university. I chose aero engineering as aviation is what I'm most interested in so it made sense to apply for aero, although it was a "wildcard" of a choice as my 5 other applications (retracted and reapplied when I got an unconditional for this) was electronics and software/information eng/computing.

Long story short, I've had 3 weeks of lectures and I'm finding the 10 credits (out of 70 this semester) for electronics to be a million times more interesting than the 30 credits for mechanical, not to mention how I actually find the mechanical classes to be so incredibly dull although I've learned the electronics stuff before while it is the first time I'm learning some of the mechanical stuff. Due to how uninteresting I'm finding the mechanical modules (like I'm struggling to make myself to even go to lectures...), I'm considering switching to electronics and software engineering as I know as a fact that I will enjoy it.

If I switch at the end of the year, I will still be in a good position as I have taken advanced higher computing last year (gotten an A) so I have done a lot of the first year computing course already, not to mention how my project was done using python, the language used for first year while I will have taken 50% of the electronics lectures (not to mention from physics and self study, I've already learned 80%~ of the topics for electronics) so even if I switch at the end of this year, I will still be in a good position in second year.

So my dilemma now is do I switch now or see if it improves or not as it still is early days (3 weeks in)?

Thanks guys!

Have you asked your university if you can switch now?

My advisor game me a really vague answer and I will be meeting him on Tuesday so I will know exactly by then.

Ok, so see what they say. By the sound of it you should probably switch now if you can.
Switching over sooner rather than later is always best, though I would bear in mind that if you've already covered a lot of the content then you might find it a touch boring.

2% off being able to go straight into second year but to be fair, had I gotten the extra 2% (in AH maths), I wouldn't be studying here and instead be studying EIE at imperial or aerospace electronics with Southampton (highly specialised electronics course). I did try to minimise how much I'd relearn but failed due to the A boundary for maths to be 75% (5% increase...).

Bickering aside, even if it is boring, as I have covered a lot of the content before, it should be easier for me to get a higher score in first year so at least it will help me in achieving a GPA average of 14+ (out of 22) as I do plan on going a year abroad.

Anyway, as there isn't really any downsides in switching, I'll probably switch and hope my advisor isn't against it.
