What's it like to live in Leicester?

Hi, I've got to choose between Leicester and Swansea, and Leicester has got the better course for me, but I don't know what it is like to live there, can any one help?

I would be studying politics
You might want to have a look at this thread that has some information about what the city is like, how it is for shopping, nights out and for eating out. Also info transport links & more

Other than that though, it is really nice living here, the accommodations in a very nice area, which on a sunny day especially looks soo pretty, lots of trees and greenery. The botanical gardens are very close by, and the halls of residence all have fields/grass on site or close by. I cant wait for the summer!
The university is much the same, nice quite small friendly campus with everything you could want. Ive always really liked this pic of it.

If you havent already, and have the oppertunity to do so id really recommend visiting each uni. As much as I liked the look of Leicester, it was when I visited that I knew straight away that I wanted to go there and thought id be happy there

I really disliked it , probably because I'm so used to life in London. Everything is much more slow , there was no night buses. I had to spend so much money on cabs. The actual university looked like a construction site when I started last October , it might have been sorted out now though. The university is good , But I just really hated living in Leicester.

I live in Somerset, so that wouldn't really be a problem for me!
Well I guess that shows it has lots of other redeaming features then, because there are loads and loads of people from London here

I also live just outside of central london myself and barely notice any difference (if any, never used night buses anyway)
To be honest, what you spend on cabs you would save on a night out in comparision to the cost in London anyway. I take out £60 when I go out at home and come home with no change. Here, I take out £15 for the same thing. Its very student friendly.

I absolutely love this picture, even more so because the one time I visited the university this is exactly what it looked like. I really want to visit it again at some point, I barely explored the campus and the only building I went inside was the Bennett building :p:

I hate Leicester. I really hate it. It's hard to explain why, but I just despise the people, the places and everything linked to it.

I'm sure you'll love it though.

I love living in Leicester! It is amazing.... i come from just outside London myself and used to use the night bus. I don't care anymore, id rather get a cab! And with enough peoples its cheap enough anyways! From town to halls with 4 people costs about £1.50 a head, from the uni to halls you can get it at a £1.20 if you dont take the first taxi!
The campus itself is lovely, very pretty as louise said, the halls are lovely, the people are friendly and tis great!
I love living in Leicester but i suppose it depends on the person! Is it possible you could visit the two unis and see which you prefer? It may be good if you could!

Hey Jessica. I actually had to pick between Swansea and Leicester too, but for History instead.

There were so many reasons that I prefered Leicester. The staff at the History department in Swansea were lovely, but the University didn't look anywhere near as cared for and the Students at Leicester were far more enthusiastic about their Uni than those at Swansea. The University was nicer and in a better location. Much more central if you want to go places. Thats just my opinion on the Uni though

As for the cities, well my Dad is from Swansea so I have experience of both  I love living in Leicester. I think the Halls are in a fantastic location and getting to the railway station, into the city centre etc is great. I think the city has a really nice atmosphere. The nightlife is pretty good, the shopping is pretty decent. I really enjoy living here- it's great for getting to London and I can visit or have friends visit without many travel complications which is a definate advantage over Swansea which is harder to get to.

Swansea is a nice city and I love the Mumbles and the Gower- I really do miss the sea being in the Midlands. But I think Leicester as a city is a nicer city, the Halls are in a better location and I think they are better integrated than the Halls at Swansea. And I think the Halls in general are just better- they're in a much nicer area, they're in a better location, they're slightly less 'cut-off'.

But anyway, it's totally up to go. Good luck with your decision :hugs:
