Wanting to do Midwifery - how have you mature students afforded it without the bursar

Hey all!

I really want to do a Midwifery degree but I am currently working full time and would have to do an access course which is no issue I can do that.

How have you mature students been able to afford to do Midwifery? obviously you have placements(which is a full time job in itself) which you don't get paid for + University.

We barely get by with me working full time does anybody have any advice? I know get another job is an option but that's not really viable due to circumstances.

What have you done? Also any tips for getting accepted? This is what I really want to do but I cannot afford it.

Thanks! X

You just apply for student finance again the same way you will have done for your first degree.
Am I missing something?

I don't have a degree lmao!

I'll be doing an access course while I'll pay for then i can apply to the midwifery at uni.
I'm not sure how student finances work - but I'm sure it's a lot less then what I'd need to be able to do the degree.

Also the NHS bursary in that article is no longer a thing which is the troubling part :frown:

You just get an advanced learner loan for access and that gets refunded if you complete the degree.

You just apply for normal student finance for the degree.

Hey Hun,

I am in the same boat, I have just started the acces course in sept. You get a advanced Leaner loan which a long as you graduate will be wiped so you don’t pay it back. My course is full time over 3 long days and I work 2 12 hour day shifts as a carer to help with money.

As for uni you will get the grant to pay for the course then you get a matience loan. Depends on your circumstances is how much you’ll get, we won’t be getting much as we own our own home and have a child but you can also work alongosde your degree doing bank shifts when your not on placement! Hope this helps xxx

Hey what access course are you on?
I’m worried about managing the course and two kids plus work with very little support as my husband does nights shift..
how are u managing? I’m planning to hopefully start my course Sept19 just waiting for the college to call me for an interview.
