Antibiotics (erythromycin) and alcohol

Dug around a bit but can't really find much to help me here.. I'm on a week's course of erythromycin at the mo, trouble is I have a couple of big events coming up where there will be plenty of drink available. The doctor told me it's not one of the antibiotics with any serious effects when combined with alcohol, and said a couple of drinks would be fine.. I'm not looking for vague things about lowering the efficiency or how I shouldn't be combining the two at all and should wait til the course is over, just interested to hear of anyone's actual experiences with the two and whether it will pose any problem?
i was on it long term and i used to drink whilst taking it, nothiing happened to me

Is it possible to pop into the doctor's and find out?

Problably be the safest to get professional advise.
she said the doc said it'd be ok for a few drinks

Just don't overdo it with the alcohol, be sensible

Ive got completely legless while on these - ive been on for about 4/5 months.

Nothing much happened after; didnt get violently sick or anything in that vein if your worried, though Ive had some pretty nasty red spots on my face the next morning - whether that was from mixing the medication and booze, I dont know. I'm now playing it safe at the pub - getting "just a coke" is pretty poor form on a guys part *sigh*

Ill be getting well and truely hammered for my bday in about 3 weeks, and then more mates bdays from there on in.
Usually with antibiotics, its ok to have some alcohol. However check with your GP, and also remember that if your on antibiotics, you are ill. Rest is a good idea, fruit juices instead of a pint etc etc.

Antibiotics hate me anyway (make me develop MORE illness whilst supposedly taking illness away) so i tend to spite them with a drink or two, and always heal fine. As long as you don't get paraletic (sp?) and drink plenty of non-alcoholic drinks to hydrate you, then if your gp says its fine, then go for it

It shouldn't really make a difference, there is no interaction listed in the BNF.

You should be aware erythromycin can make the pill less effective though (if you're on the pill).
hahah you gonna get Wwwwwwwwwwwassted boy!!!
It's something I would be prepared to risk because I'm always sceptical about this sort of stuff. I also can't really see them really thinking someone being treated for acne or an STI would be able to lay off the booze for too long.

But nor would I listen to a bunch of people on an internet forum.
depends really, the common chav street doctors say that drink and wor aunty b combines to make the drink hit you harder and feel more wasted, though that may be an urban myth. Btw if you do have acne you do realise drink makes it worse?

A 5 day course of metronidazole is the treatment of choice for a couple of STIs (trichomonas and BV). Metronidazole will make you sick if you drink alcohol with it. So you would be expected to lay off the alcohol if being treated for those...

It is common to tell all people being treated for STIs to lay off the alcohol during treatment. This is because you're more likely to forget about your treatment and expose someone else to your half treated bits when drunk.

Erthyromycin at least with me, can make me feel a bit queasy on its own, if you feel the same I'd say just to bear that in mind when you drink, too.

And it'd be smart not to get so wasted you are throwing up all night or anything, doesn't really help getting the antibiotics into you
