Mechanical - CAmbrdige, Bath, Imperial College, Liverpool
Civil - CAmbridge, Cardiff, Imperial College, Bristol
General - Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, Imperial College, Strathclyde

Conisdering you're looking to go into IB then Cambrdige, Imperial College and (possibly) Durham, Bristol and Bath are where to go.

Those are the top rated departments anyway.

Imperial doesn't do General.

Oh, I was only going by the little I know from family contacts, plus the Times league table, which does rank Imperial as third for general (with no grad prospect score)

Just goes to prove that everlasting saying about league tables "they are pure crap".

agreed. I went to a uni that was sub20th...I know not that good but to be honest a mate who went to one that was 50th or something, was far better and happier with the level of teaching and study there. Don't rely on those tables they are a bunch of bananas, sorry I meant ****.

At the end of the day its the contents that really do matter. I would recommend Bristol or Birmingham being such good universities at decent locations.

With Civil, dont choose the course. Just make sure it accredited. Choose the university.
Given that Imperial is best for those courses plus the following thread http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=574223 (look at the stats) id say its safe to say Imperial is the perfect choice for you, im not biased at all . also dont go to oxbridge unless you want to do General Engineering. if your interested the Imperial syllabuses are here http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/courses/undergraduatesyllabuses.

My engineering cells are sparking away right now... it first appeared that we were going to Imperial to actually do engineering but now it seems we'll be herded towards the evil that is IB.
If you're interested in moving to Scotland another one to consider is Edinburgh Univeristy. I too may try for investment banking once I graduate and that's where I'm going for the same course. I know plenty of graduates from Edinburgh who got jobs in top IB firms in London with maths/engineering degrees.

Oxford does a general engineering course that allows you to specialise in either mech or civil enggg.
If i recall correctly, the last time i checked The Times Uni ratings last year, for mechanical engineering surprisingly Oxford wasn't even in the top 50 :O If you're looking at the oxbridge level, then definately cambridge is the better choice, although imperial is matching their department in engineering/sciences lately, so that's also an option to be looking into.

Omg... that is because Oxford and Cambridge DO NOT DO mechanical engineering. They only do general engineering - stop reading those ****ty league tables, not even the dumb ass reporters can get university courses right.

Its like with leicester and some others, they do a unified engineering course where people branch off in the second (or even the third year) and so its reflected this way, hence they don't have ratings in specific engineering disciplines, only the general one.

How you find them to be top rated? I'm not arguing, just asking..

First of all that post of mine was crap. I wasn't aware that Imperial didn't do go general engineering. However, I was aware that Cambridge only did general engineering so I've no friggin idea why I put them there. When was this, April? I was on the loopy juice for most of that month. I really don't know...

"Top rated" is quite vague and by that I didn't necessarily mean top ranked (I've made my opinion clear elsewhere on ranking universities from bestest to worsest  ) The Times table does as a general guide (being slightly more accurate in my eyes), but no more than that.

So my "top ranked" was those with a sufficient domestic rep as an engineering institution but also particularly solid institutions with international rep and some kudos in IB (Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, LSE, Imperial and, to a lesser degree Warwick and Bristol being the leaders there arguably. Regardless of discipline). So a bit of a balancing act.

However it's looked Imperial is certainly the leading choice there, depending on how the OP would feel studying there (syllabus, location etc). It has rep, the teaching, the faciltiies and the appeal in IB.

But then, in my opinion, Warwick and leading red bricks (Manchester) aren't really far off either. Cambridge and Durham if general engineering was an option.

Feel free to disagree if you think I'm wrong. Especially as I know a reasonable amount about engineerng, but am not an expert.
