For my A Level Moving Image Arts course I have to pick a film director whom my final piece will be influenced by. My film is going to be depressing and deal with some serious real life issues. At the moment the best I've come up with is Darren Aronofsky, but I wouldn't mind a few other ideas. It needs to be a director with a common theme of depression and real world problems. Originally I had Danny Boyle, but outside of Trainspotting his movies aren't that depressing or real world issue stuff. Anyway, I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me other ideas for directors.

Thing is they dont make much money and I cant give you a director offhand. You cant keep making serious films and losing money.

The way i would do it is to research.

1. Start with a film about depression.

2. Then examine the directors filmography to see what other issues they have covered.

Lars von trier, Stephen Daldry

Serious issues, then I suggest you look at Chan Wook Park and the vengeance trilogy. they are pretty serious issues.
