Mental health nursingWatch
I’ve got a couple, firstly how much general nursing is there? And how many hours a week do you do in placement?
Hoping I can help with your questions.
As a mental health nurse your day to day duties will include some elements of nursing but specialising in supporting individuals who have - anxiety, depression, eating disorders, drug and alcohol addictions etc. There may be elements of physical care as well as giving medications. You will also work closely with other professionals such as social workers, psychiatrists and health visitors.
When you are looking at different mental health nursing degrees the structure of the course will give you a good indication as to how much is general nursing and how much is focused on mental health. Every university is different and I can only speak generally but for nursing based degrees uit is normally a 50/50 split. On your placements you may be required to work shift work which will include night shifts and weekends.
I hope that helps, for more in-depth support I would advise researching the mental health nursing degrees you want to do or speak directly with the universities you are thinking of applying with.
Thanks - Sophie.
