quick math gcse question...

what does dy/dx in differentiation actually mean because I'm so confused.

dy/dy doesn't mean anything...? If you mean dy/dx, it just means how is y changing in terms of x.

For example, dy/dx of x^2 = 2x, at the given value of x, the gradient is 2x

It means an infinitesimally small change in yy divided by an infinitesimally small change in yy... so the whole thing just evaluates to 1.

Careful with the wording - the rate of change of the gradient is d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2 y}{dx^2}, because the gradient itself along the curve is dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx}.
