Portfolio

Hi there.

Apologies if this is a bit too cheeky but is anyone willing to show (or email) an example of the work that they included in their "pre-application" architecture portfolio? Anything that would let me know roughly what sort of standard I should be aiming to achieve in my own work. I've never really pursued any of the creative fields as it were, but I'll hopefully be taking some evening classes starting this september and it'd be nice to have some idea of roughly how far I'd have to develop my own abilities before making my UCAS applications.

Thanks in advance.

this has been asked a few times, so you might want to run a search. if you scroll down on www.rk-tecture.com to around september 2005 you should find my ucas application portfolio. other people have also posted their stuff if you search TSR over the past couple of years.

Ah yes a search, how embarrassing...

Thanks for the link though! I'm now off to wade my way through page after page of results to see what I can dig up.

I found it tucked away in April 2005.
Looking at mine now makes me cringe (what was I thinking with some of the stuff I put in there?!) so I'm afraid I don't think it'll be going online .

I would have taken pictures of my portfolio, but it's already been taken apart (well most of it).

About standards, I don't think you can really say a type of standard (as if there are certain criteria to be met, which set a standard), but obviously to stand a fair chance it should be quite high, showing a good amount of creativity, perhaps individuality and skill marked in a range of different areas. Most people applying will have high standard work, so that's what you should aim for. The key is to think about showing your way of working, and show that you can 'think' creatively.

As I think has been mentioned, use as much time as you can observing things, drawing things, trying out different media, experimenting, developing your ideas, working on personal projects, use the summer (if you're not going away) productively by working on a lot of artwork that you could include and by the end of summer and by that time you should have a fairly good portfolio of work, since you will have probably improved a great deal from whatever level you're at. And yes taking evening classes is a good start.

These were done last sept though so i guess i've got better since then.

Altogether i took about 9 final pieces and sketchbooks full of sketches, drawings, ideas, thoughts etc. I basically agree with everything 9mm said.
I didn't include any architectural drawings (or anything building-related) in my portfolio, and only half of one piece (out of 8) was directly from observation. :erm:

A quick print screen from a few mashed together publisher pages (obviously the images in the bottom left page weren't arranged like that!)

Hah, really?!
I thought my work would be the complete opposite to what they liked... not "stylish" enough .

I'm not thaaaat artyfarty really.

Cheers guys. The quality of your work really does make me panic though

Knowing how carp I am at the moment makes me think perhaps I'd be better off sticking to structural engineering instead of trying juggle work towards a Part 1 exemption at the same time.

I agree, and it just screams psychedelic (in a very good way). :p:

I really don't think it's Bartlettian at all. AT ALL.

But thank you, I can assure you that no hallucinogens were consumsed prior to their production .
(See, I don't just do "ugly" :p:)

your portfolio let me think of a guy at bartlett who uses similar textiles and materials for architectural project:smile:

by the way,why not go to CSM for fashion design???i believe you will do great works on fashion as well:smile:

Fashion?

That wouldn't fulfill/challenge me.
well,I am just afraid only the atomsphere at few shools would enhance your creativies.

and for architecture in real life, many ppl are just doing 1+1=2 stuffs(constrcutions+geometrical blocks+economy...)

insisting on yourself,good lcuk.

you know, if she said she doesent want to do fashion, she doesent want to do it. and you cant possibly know what she'd be good at when you dont even know her!
if architecture was just maths, then art wouldnt be so important for entry to the course would it! i think you are thinking of architectural engineering there! remeber: architects design and do the creative first designs, and engineers do the maths and tell them whether or not it is possible.

why not try and have a helpful input sometimes... you never know, you might not get criticized every time you post on TSR.
