Veganism: Does it affect your social life?

Since becoming, in his words "almost vegan", people don't ask Adrian Chiles out for dinner any more.

Has the presenter just got fickle friends, or does being vegan really affect more than your diet? Does it have an effect on your social life too?

These vegans have told us how they navigate the issue and give tips for anyone else thinking about a plant-based diet.

"What usually happens when you're the vegan in your friendship group is that you end up picking the place you go.

"I know some people will be very outspoken about being vegan and might admonish someone for eating a steak, which is like having a go at someone for their political beliefs. It's not very nice to go for dinner with someone who tells you off."

When it comes to eating out vegan as part of a group, just be friendly, polite and accept "there will be rare occasions you have to cobble together a meal from starters and sides."

Offering recipes and ideas to whoever's hosting you - that way you'll keep receiving those invitations - and adds that lots of dishes can be "veganised" with a tweak here or there.

Are you vegan? Or do you have vegan friends? If this has affected socialising, how? What tips do you have?
I have plenty of vegan friends and my best friend is allergic to dairy.
Some of the people I grew up with have turned militant vegan and no longer deign to associate with the consumers of meat & dairy unless it involves conversion attempts or abuse.

It's usually easy to accommodate vegan diets, either by tweaking recipes or arranging to eat at a vegan restaurant.
A few friends are vegans with other additional dietary requirements like gluten free, organic raw veg or natural sugar only.
I always keep a few vegan products in my fridge- sunflower spread/margarine, peanut butter, swedish glace ice cream, quorn nuggets and vegan chocolate.
I make my own dairy free nutella, crisps, sauces, jams and sweets.
I use pectin and agar agar as gelatine substitutes.
Apple sauce, orange juice, flax seed, mashed banana, egg replacement formula and coconut yogurt are good substitutes for egg.
Soya, oat milk, coconut, hemp and rice milks are all great vegan substitutes for milk.
