Are there many people who go to Cambridge who are teetotal? The reason I ask is that I am teetotal and I am slightly concerned I will become a social reject when I go to Cambridge next year.

It doesn't really matter to be honest, I know someone who for cultural reasons was teatotal until a boat club dinner the only thing he regrets is not going and socialising whilst other people were drinking.

I know drunk people can be very annoying, but a lot of the college social events that make it easy to get to know people in freshers' week are going to have alcohol. You don't need to drink it, but turning up will help.

Alaric.

Fair few people in our Freshers don't drink. Their college parents loved them at the first formal is it meant they got all the wine

It won't make you a social reject in the slightest - if you can have a good time without booze it's also far cheaper! But I agree with Alaric - if you can put up with the drunken people (and personally I love being sober when other people are drunk cos it's dead funny) do go to all the socials anyway

Best thing for you. You can just watch drunk people make a fool out of themselves; probably me

I'm not a big fan of alocohol cos I don't really like the taste of most kinds I've tried.
I think I'm just going to socialise and maybe try a bit and see how I get on. Don't really want to be drunk, but don't think I want to go teetotal.

I dont drink.....i tend to have a little out of peer pressure, but i really dont have much! You get on fine without drinking, but i'm not going to pretend that not drinking doesnt give you a sort of social disadvantage. If you drink, you've got something to do with people....if you dont, it's a little harder to socialise!
I drink far too much - the total other end of the spectrum, but I don't hate people who don't drink, unless they give you lectures about it. It's like the people who moan at you when you smoke - we don't care, if you don't care. (although if you do care, we still don't care, but we do hate you. Funny ol' world, ain't it?)

i hate people who smoke...it's unpleasent and i dont want to be around people who do it. I dont mind drunk people, except when they get all stupid!

I agree.

I don't mind being in the presence of drinkers because I know it won't affect me in any way. Smoking however, really annoys me.

Yes, I don't teetotal because it's against my principles or anything. I would very much like to drink sociably if only I liked the taste!

i hope you get in now....cos it's hard finding non-drinkers to hang out with!

Drunkenness does three things:
makes people happy, angry, or depressed. The first is the only one I would consider sociable... I hate seeing people drunk out of their head and depressed or angry... they hit.. HARD.

I don't drink. It's not been a cause for social rejection.

Or course, I'm a reclusive sociopath as well, so I tend to be a social reject anyway, but thats a separate issue.

I did teetotal for a term. It sucked. Mind you, this term has been excessive so far in terms of alcohol consumption, and that has caused many stupid things to happen as well  Can't win.

Emma. When you come up/down for interview, let me know...and we can have a good non-alcoholic drink somewhere. After that we'll go find your interviewers and bribe them!
