M1 Projectiles question

A particle of mass 2.5kg is projected along a rough horizontal surface with a velocity of 5 m/s. After travelling a distance of 2m the ball leaves the rough surface as a projectile and lands on the ground which is 1.2m vertically below. Given that the total time taken for the ball to travel from the initial point of projection to the point which it lands is 1.0 seconds. Find:

a) The time which the particle is in contact with the surface.

I'm struggling with the diagram tbh. The diagram the worked solution gives is on Q7 of this link:

I don't get why 'U' is horizontal to the table and how we know there's the vertical component for speed is 0 from the question.
so although we do not know how fast the ball is moving when it leaves the surface we do know that it is moving horizontally then.

thus the vertical velocity is 0 m/s

using s = ut + 1/2at2

with u = 0 and a = 9.8 and s = 1.2 you can find the time taken to reach the ground.

And with the time taken to reach the ground and the total time you can work out how long it was on the rough surface for.

yh i tired to do it and used the horizontal movement for the question... then i realized i cant do that cause the surface is rough and speed would change, so we wouldn't know how the true time(we could if it was a smooth plane).
