Hi guys ive been in a quandary for sometime with what to apply for course wise. I want to specialise in reptiles as a career. I would love to mix both the extinct side of them dinosaurs and crocodillians (palaeontology) and their living counterparts (zoology).
In the end last year i decided to go the zoology route and applied for all zoology courses. Particularly aiming at the university of Sussex due to their courses flexibility. I got all distinctions in my college HE course, but due to a date mix up on one of the papers for my conditionally required maths gcse (i only got a level three) it kept me out of my first and second choice unis :s
I ended up going to Bangor through the clearing but had some problems there and as i was so unhappy there i transferred to an undergrad college closer to home. However i have since realised the college course content and the access to resources at the college is way worse than expected. For me to stay and complete the course i feel id be underselling myself as im a mature student and feel like this is kinda my last shot and i dont want to waste it. I am re-sitting the maths gcse again this year and plan to take my grace year this year and drop out of college at Christmas.
Now getting to the core of my problem i was planning on nailing the maths gcse this year and just applying to Sussex again just like alst year.
However a friend mentioned palaeontology courses that are available and whether it might be a smarter to take a paleo course instead of a zoology course to get to where i want to go. Ive also considered a zoology undergraduate and then doing a palaeontology masters after.
After much thinking about both courses and where one vs the other and where they might or might not take me im still not sure what to do now. There isnt a lot of cross over for one to the other in any undergrad courses ive looked at and time seems to be quickly running down to get an application in through ucas.
Id love some advice from peeps which may hopefully give me the information/context that i require to make the decision i need to make to get myself on the correct course.
