Wish I was good enough to apply!

Someone on this forum did apply, I can't quite remember their username it was something like unique or unikq.

Reply 2

no harm sending a email to richard to ask him if you got it...

Reply 3

Fantastic you've applied  what do you play? If you play a string instrument, you'd be very welcome to join the String Ensemble - and that goes for all string players, not just Ash scholars

I applied for an Ash scholarship, and was auditioned - but the standards are high. If you can get an Ash Scholarship, you can probably get into the Royal College of Music anyway, I think. Oh to be in that exclusive class of player

I wish you lots of luck with your application and hope you get one! They're hard, but by no means impossible, because Richard DOES award 5 each year. He'll send the results out by post, so don't fret.

if you are a pianist you can join chamber music society i think it is the only society you can join unless you are amazingly good then in that case you can join symphony orchestra as a concert pianist i suppose

how many Imperial musicians are there on here besides Long Jon? Is that not a blatant plug for ICSE, Jon?

Anyway back on track, pianists mainly do chamber music, but if you're into bands and stuff you can probably find people who want your services as a keyboard player!

that's me!
... he told me to piss off though.. :frown: fully gutted.
im INCREDIBLY curious as to know the string players who got it... if you're one of them, PLEASE flag up!

Jonathan and I know quite a few of the current Ash scholars on string instruments.

You have to be rather good to get the scholarship generally - several of them were NYO players, one or two were BBC Young Musicians semi-finalists, and the rest had been doing post grade 8 studies since the age of about 14, normally at one of the junior departments of music colleges, or at specialist music schools.

don't feel too disheartened at not getting the place - it saves you having to audition for ICSO once you arrive in October which can be nerve wracking!

commiserations...

well we're not the UK's University Orchestra of the Year 2008 for nothing (www.symphuni.com)...

If you are junior dept or county youth orch leader standard, I guess you could apply for an exhibition once you're here - they are made to current students and are worth a few lessons (not as many as the Ash). Again, about 5 awards made each year.

The other thing to note is that the Ash scholarship only gives you 10 RCM lessons a year which to some people is hardly anything at all.

Haha, some advertising here! We are indeed the best university orchestra in the country :P

Which junior dept were you in? There are loads of musical opportunities at IC, drop Richard an email if your in any doubt, he'll always be pleased to help :P

and aparantly ULU SO is better  never heard either so im not the one to judge though..

Reply 13

ULSO is an orchestra of university students but not an orchestra of a university if that makes sense. They also have a lot of RAM students and music students, neither of which ICSO have.

That said, their string section is absolutely awesome and most of ICSO's best players play in ULSO too.

Reply 14

that's true actually, RAM is part of Uni of London... ok, so now i see the bias... i still heard ICSO was amazing

This is me hijacking this thread because it is vaguely related to what I want to talk about; money.

To you internationals who will be doing engineering:

How on earth can you afford £80,000 in tuition fees alone? Are your parents bathing in money or are you just going to wing it and take a loan?

Reply 16

Scholarships and the such no doubt. But yea, a large chunk of the internationals are obscenely rich

Reply 17

they get monies and sponsorship from firms from their native countries. sometimes even their government, but yeh, if you're gonna come over to study in UK, you'd have a bit a cash to play around with anyway

Rich and smart.

(Remember, EU students don't pay international fees, they pay the same as UK students.)
