Ok, you got me. I couldn't resist :awesome:

Many of you were a great support during my GCSEs and through the start of my journey into working life. I’ve been extremely busy since my last blog :work: and I thought I wouldn’t have enough time to maintain one this year, however…I just missed it too much!

I’m into my third year of an apprenticeship and it’s amazing! I’ve been involved in so much (which I’ll explain throughout my updates) and I plan to do so much more too. At college, I’m studying for a HNC Level 4 and…as if that isn’t enough I’m due to take my driving test in the New Year! :yikes:

With my HNC this year, I made a commitment to be way more organised than I was with my BTEC. (Admittedly I left a few assignments to the last minute, when there was no need to!) I’d love to finish up with Distinctions in all my units and I’ve set a personal target to hand in every assignment at least one week early…we’ll see how that goes.

So please, join in, ask me question and let’s have a laugh! If any of you have any questions about my background, GCSEs, apprenticeships, BTECs, HNCs, working life…anything, just ask away

No promises that my updates will be regular - and I’m relying on you lot to give me the occasional nudge! :poke:

GCSE Grades:
GCSE Grades

Maths - A*
English - A*
Physics - A*
Chemistry - A*
Biology - A*
History - A*
Geography - A*
German - A*
ICT - Distinction (equivalent to an A)

BTEC Result:
BTEC Grade

Double Distinction (DD) in a Level 3 National Diploma

What am I studying now?
Here's my target!

I'm currently in my first year of HNC and my goal is to achieve distinctions in every unit - and not have to resit any due to the new rules for resubmissions/rework!

*Why I Chose an Apprenticeship After GCSEs*:
Here's Why...

To be honest, I was torn. I never expected to get an offer on the table, and when I did, it really gave me something to consider. My plan had always been college, then university. If I'd have chosen A-levels, I'd have done Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Geology.

In the end (at the last minute - and I mean GCSE results day last minute!) I decided to jump into an apprenticeship. Firstly, because despite getting the grades above, I wanted to be able to prove I was worthy of them - not just through passing an exam but by applying them in the real world. Secondly, I was extremely quiet at school and I barely spoke to anyone. Throwing myself into an apprenticeship would, in my eyes, be a great opportunity (and a challenge) to get me to open up and develop my confidence, more-so than a college environment may have done.

If you're struggling to decide your next step, honestly don't rush it - take as much time as you can, but in the end remember there's more than one path to get to where you want to be, it doesn't always have to be the same as everyone else.

Just because I've opted for an apprenticeship, it doesn't mean studying wasn't for me, nor does it mean that I don't want to go to university. In fact, I'd absolutely love to get a degree (in physics, or material science, or engineering) and I'm going to do everything I can to make that happen.

If you're struggling to make any decisions about your next steps, or you'd like to discuss anything about your options, I'd be more than happy to help if I can!

To Do Lists:

If you followed any of my previous threads, I’d love to know how you’re all getting on too!

I’ll get a tag list sorted below at some point - so if you'd like to be included, just let me know

Until next time…

:hi:

So, the recovery from a great weekend in Birmingham begins Thankfully I’ve not got as much to recover from as most of the others , just a little sleep deprived…It was definitely worth it though - I had a blast! :nutcase:

This update will mainly revolve around my HNC. Since I started in September, I’ve had one assignment to hand in and most recently received 2 more (that are due in coming weeks). My college day is structured so that I have 5 lessons spanning 8am-5pm . In some ways, I prefer this  because it means everything is done in a day and I can spend the other 4 in the workplace, meaning that in comparison to a student doing the HNC full time, I’m filling what would be free periods with work that actually applies what I’m learning. On the other hand, it’s a very long day :tumble:! The lessons can drag a bit too and I struggle to keep focussed for the whole 1hr 30 - as do some of our tutors it seems!

I study the following units this year:
  • Aerodynamics
  • Engineering Science
  • Engineering Maths
  • Electrical Principles and Applications
  • Engineering Design

The assignment I’ve initially submitted came from Electrical and, let’s just say, I may have failed on my personal target to get it in early. Sunday night panic set in and it was a mad dash to get it done :burnout:. I can’t say I was too pleased with myself , though there was a lot going on with other projects I was involved in, so my time was pretty scarce.

Learning from this, I have 2 monthly calendars stuck on my bedroom wall. They’re dry-wipe so I can change the month and subsequent dates in each box (money saving ya see! :scrooge:) and I’ve written all my deadlines on it. There’s other events that aren’t college related, but it’s all fancily colour coded and the college bits stand out. I’ve then put a personal deadline in the week before to submit them early :ahhhhh:. Hopefully having this set out so visually, and for dates well in advance, it’ll help me hit the objective on all future assignments :poke:.

I know this probably sounds very cheesy and corporate and all “process improvement”-like, but I’ve really come to enjoy that sort of thing, looking at ways to be more efficient. It must just be the environment I’m surrounded by and the idea that it’s always drummed into us. I’d almost go as far as to say I enjoy organising things as much as Spirithorse

As always, any questions, suggestions or just general chit-chat's always welcome! If you want to be added/removed from the tags, just give me a shout.

Until next time :wavey:

Hi Brainz! Loving your comeback blog so far. I've been really busy myself so forgot to reply to the last one, but I'll definitely be following. Got an assignment hand-in and exam next month and project work is a bit stressful too, so I know how you feel.

Best of luck and looking forward to hearing more from you.

It was amazing to see you too - apologies we didn't get chance to chat as much as I'd have liked, but it was great to see you all the same!

Thank you :hugs:
