'Enlarged' labia on 'Embarrassing Bodies'

I was just watching Ep 1 of this on 4OD. I've always been really impressed with the programme before, but I was shocked to see one woman who came in about her labia being directed straight to surgery!
For one, I've always thought I had normal labia, but according to this programme (and in comparison to that woman) then I must be hideously abnormal :frown:

As far as I was aware, there was nothing wrong with having labia that protude outwards - infact, I always thought that completely flat pudenda was something only children/undeveloped individuals had!
This is the page where the 'problem' is listed, and I think a lot of other people were also kind of angry that this was included as something which is an 'illness':

Not to be overly personal, but can anyone else relate to this?

Can't say anything without pictures (of you)
i also thought it looked normal, i think she was referred to a plastic surgeon for her own confidence though? maybe i am wrong.

Yeah, I know what you mean. And there was another thread with people criticising the show about how they showed surgery as the only answer. I didn't see the episode so I can't really comment about the women but I wouldn't worry OP, there's nothing unhealthy about labia that protrude outwards. I thought that was normal aswell! Lol
It looks like she has a tiny willy :s

I actually don't know how people can watch that show, let alone participate in it! How demeaning must it be to come and showcase your ***** on air!
It's car crash TV, you shouldn't look because it's disgusting, but you can't resist a sneak peek.

That is rediculous! Don't worry, you're probably perfectly normal. The idea of women looking like this ideal comes from the porn industry where the women are made to look like little 10 year old girls if at all possible, no hair down there and well, labia that looks like a young girl's too. Ironically the upper half obviously wouldn't be so attractive if the woman looked like she was 10, so that's all big melons.

This is why I think teen sex education magazines are important.
Here, I know it's a German music magazine aimed at 13 year olds, but it teaches everyone in Germany all the know about sex. This is what they have to say on what your genitals should look like if they are normal:

They have a load of articles (in German) on that page explaining that large labia protuding is genetic and perfectly normal and definitely not something odd to go and get plastic surgery over.
When I watched it i was completely shocked! It looked really weird!

You thought it looked weird? :s-smilie:

Well, according to this: http://sexuality.about.com/od/sexual_worries/a/big_labia.htm
and these pictures (NSFW drawings):

it seems perfectly normal.
I was just angered that they would show that as an 'illness'; fair enough, that particular lady was embarrassed, but the doc. should've reassured her she was normal, but if she still wanted to, there are options available to her to reduce her 'size'.
Personally, she looked perfectly normal to me - like I said, I think mine are bigger than hers and I never realised there was something 'wrong' with that!

There isn't anything wrong about it at all, obviously looks odd to those who have small ones, as you don't see many larger ones on tv, due to what I said above about appealing to perves. The labia normally have a large growth spurt when puberty comes along.

ok, link worked now and those aren't very big even! jeez, i hate the porn industry some times for making women feel selfconscious. Like some of the comments on the website say, there are perfectly normal women out there, who's boyfriends love their vaginas but because they don't look like porn stars they want to get plastic surgery - rediculous!

No more pictures please. But I agree, I don't think this should be portrayed as an "embarassing illness" - it's natural variation and this sort of thing only serves to make women feel even more inadequate than they already do about their bodies!

Ah, why has this thread been edited to remove the Channel 4 link? :frown:

Ah OK, sorry - didn't realise.
But yes, it made me really angry!

Especially reading some other people's comments on the C4 website where they said they had been watching the programme with other people who'd said stuff like "Eugh, that's so gross" and things

sorry, I wasn't thinking, since as I said, it's magazine aimed at 12/13 year olds  . I know the UK is a bit pruder. I don't mean that in the sense that I'm objecting to the warning, totally justified under the forum's rules. Just didn't occur to me at the time I posted it that it wouldn't be allowed for such a purpose.
i was shocked at this too, tbh looks wise im prob the same as that woman, and ive always thought it was normal and have defo have no complaints

its actually made me feel a bit bad about myself now :frown:

don't feel bad, that is just a stupid program!
It's perfectly normal, probably just under half of all women look like that. I'm from Europe, everyone is a bit more open there, so believe me I know. Girl's always get fully naked in all the changing rooms and showers, mixed saunas etc... you get the idea, I wasn't staring at people, but i have noticed that it's totally normal.

this programme just makes me so angry, you can't understand how angry I am! It's like putting a woman with B-cup breast on the show and running her off to the plastic surgeon to make sure she had E-G cups, like all the porn stars.
