I'd recommend "How Markets Fail" by John Cassidy. It's a very good book regarding the Great recession.

Money by Martin Amis.

It's a fantastic novel and I'm sure you could find a ton of inventive ways to draw parallels to the recession or the human condition and consumerism etc etc.
Just a suggestion as I suspect a general book on economics is often quite dry.
Edit: Just to make clear it's not a economics book.
