Are politics graduates looked upon favourably? I want to work for the government somehow, whether it be working as a civil servant or something else, but would a law degree hinder or help this?

You can get a career in politics with any degree. Or even without a degree (albeit having one might help). So many lawyers have become Prime Ministers or Presidents around the world-like Obama.
I would argue, a Law degree is better than a politics degree. But no- having a non-politics degree will NOT hinder your civil servant aspirations.
