Is this normal / how do I stop this?

Please preserve anonymoity as I don't want friends who know my user name to associate this with me.

I was wondering if people could help me - I have two seperate 'conditions' which regularly occur to me and I was wondering if they were normal and if not if people could tell me what they are and how I stop them. Are they serious? I mean do I need to go to the doctor because at the moment I am terrified that the doctor will say I am wasting their time.

1. Often when I stand up I will get a really bad headrush sensation which will make me feel like I am about to pass out. The periods of dizzyness last about 1 minute or so. I know it is normal for this to happen occasionally but should I worry that it happens literally 9 times out of 10?

2. At night when sleeping I will suddenly get this really intense leg cramp which will last a couple of minutes which is really painful. It only seems to happen at night and after a couple of minutes it will go away. I presume it isn't that serious as it doesn't seem to have any lasting effect but it still frustrating none the less.

So I was wondering if people knew what these might be obviously I realise you aren't doctors but some indication of what they might be and how I can stop them would be really appreciated. Thank you

Are you eating enough? Seriously?
Obviously I can't really help with your specific issues, but bear this is mind: whenever I have an issue that I think might waste a doctor's time, I call NHS Direct and they can advise you on how to self-manage it or whether it's necessary to visit the doctor.

I have the frist problem, got a blood test, and I am anemic, so take iron tablets, so its worth getting checked.

I get both of those very occassionally. The head rush is just standing up too quick and the cramp might just be caused by sleeping in a funny position. Theyve never worried me. Im sure you're fine.

I always get head rush so that everything goes black and I feel like I'm going to pass out. I went to my doctor and he said there was nothing wrong with me but this was the same one who said the lump in my neck certainly wasn't cancer (it was), my brother's heart was fine (several holes in the heart along with leaky valves and missing part of an artery) and my mum had IBS instead of appendicitis. So yeah, I wouldn't trust what he said. Best thing to do is to get checked out by your doctor.

My friend had the first and it was anemia (as a previous poster said) so maybe get it checked out.

And I think a lotof people get the second one, it's annoying but I don't think it's too serious. (NOT professional opinion  )

The first could be from Vertigo. This is to do with the fluid in your aural canals not working properly or something. I used to have it quite badly and I'd faint a lot. I got some tablets from the doctor and it improved greatly.

I get both of these, it could be related to low blood pressure (I get it because I'm on the low side of normal) or some type of anemia, probably nothing to worry about but if its severe perhaps see a doctor or nurse? they can check
I get the leg cramp often, and foot cramp too but its more like bones locking in place i.e its sore but if I try to bend the joint(i,e on back of knee or side of foot) it suddenly goes in agony and even when I wake up hours later I limp a bit as the bones still tender.

is this similar to what you have?
I had a friend who used to get cramp a lot...she asked the doctor and apparently it was related to salt deficiency. There wasn't anything that could be done about it, but she should increase the amount of salt she had, a bit.

The first problem is one that I get, and I am also anaemic, so worth getting checked out. Also that sort of dizzyness is often related to blood pressure (apparently).

If you are blacking out/ fainting its definitely worth getting checked out
I get both at different points.
1) I get this mainly when I have eaten much in the last 12 hours or when I'm tired (So mainly first thing in the morning), and usually when I get out the bath. As recommended, check your iron levels, eat, drink and sleep well, and if your worried about it, see a doctor.
2) Sometimes while sleeping this has happened to me, there was a 2 week period where it would happen every night. When it happens, it wakes me up, and I almost cry from the pain at its worst. When I asked my physics teacher, she said it was to do with the over-constriction of the leg muscles, and was related to stress usually. However, again see your doctor if your worried.
I also get mine when swimming, and changing from slow to fast speed very rapidly, or swimming very fast for a long time, confirming what my physics teacher said, hence why I don't worry about mine. In the short term, try reading for a while before sleep, or something else to relax you.

Your number 2 is very common. i often suffer from cramp in my calves...particularly on staurday nights after having played sport that day, but it does seem to happen randomly too.

Take a quick look here

OK, its not much as noone knows exactly why this happens, but there are a couple of suggestions...dehydration has to be the top of the list.

i get number 1 quite often and especially when i'm feeling too warm - like just out of a bath, i have to sit down to recover from feeling faint for about 5 minutes. I'm not sure if it's normal but at least you know someone else has it? lol

the second one i also get, not too often but man when it happens it KILLS. i once got it so badly when sitting in a chair watching tv i started crying and shouted for my mum to help me, it was seriously that bad, but once you massage your leg a bit the pain eases:smile:
could be posteral hypotension, i has this to some extent so when i stand up there would be a dip in my blood pressure and i would get dizzy, it was controled by tablets in the end because my bp was high anyway.
number 2 is just a charlie horse
I get number one occasionally. I was tested for anaemia and it wasn't that, think it was just when I got too dehydrated.

this, because the only way I can see #2 being serious is if it's muscle cramping from an electrolyte imbalance...could happen due to starvation, over hydrating...most causes are related to your diet which is why it jumped to my mind as you're dizzy also.
