Bad skin

Apologies in advance, this may sound a bit gross :p:

I've never really had 'good' skin, ever since the age of about 12. But now I'm 19 it's just getting more and more frustrating.

Firstly, my skin tone is really 'dull' and it makes me look ill constantly.

Secondly, though I don't have many 'proper' spots on my face and my bad skin isn't that noticeable unless you're close up, I have loads of subtle blackheads and horrible under-the-skin kind of spots. I have combination skin - it gets oily but rarely, is dry a lot of the time but gets too oily even if I use non-greasy moisturiser, and my spots will just not leave me alone. I get a lot of spots on my back and chest too.

I was given regular antibiotics for it when I was younger when my spots were much worse, but they stopped working after a while.

I then tried Benzoyl Peroxide cream which I will use occasionally but it just makes my skin peel --> dryness gets worse --> moisturiser used --> greasy skin. And it never gets rid of the blackheads/ white spots.

I know these problems probably point to a bad diet but I rarely eat sweets, chocolate, crisps or anything like that. I also have healthy cereals for breakfast every morning and veg for dinner most nights.

Admittedly, I very rarely drink which probably doesn't help, but I just cannot do it, I never really get thirsty and if I force myself it makes me feel ill. If I do drink though, it'll be water.

I don't know what I'm asking here :s-smilie: but if anyone has any advice on how to sort this out it would be much appreciated.

Have you tried a mud mask ???

They are fantastic - the next day, I am not joking, I couldn't believe the cleaness.

Don't go for spot stuff - just purifying gel every day

a bit costy but worth it.

I've had rubbish skin since I was about 11, I feel your pain! Recently I bought something from the Avon and people commented on how good my skin looked with it. This is assuming you are female, but it's called invisible light illuminating make up base. You can wear it on it's own (which is what I do) or under foundation. It makes your skin look a lot more glowy and less dull. I've been using it for a few months and I don't think I could stop using it now!

Another thing that I find helps is having a hot drink in the morning. I know hot water with lemon is supposed to be detoxifying but I don't like the taste of it so I drink camomile tea in the morning first thing, before I've had anything to eat and that seems to have made an improvement.

Lastly, I have stopped drinking milk, after reading a thread by minimo (I think) where she said that her skin cleared up a lot after giving up dairy. I like cheese too much to completely cut dairy out but I have started drinking soya milk instead and it seems to have made a difference. I don't seem to get any of those horrible sore red under the skin type spots, so that might be something to try! Hope that helps a bit

Eat more fruit and veg, drink more water, get at least 1 hour of moderate exercise a day, get plenty of sleep, wash regularly, etc.

The fruit and veg will help get rid of toxins in your body, possibly improving your skin.

Drink more water, again, it helps your body filter out toxins and waste products which may not help your skin condition. It also keeps you hydrated, keeping your skin healthier so you're less likely to get dry skin and/or spots. You need at least 2 litres a day, it isn't hard, a pint of water at breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between is a good start. Thirst is a sign of dehydration, you get it after you need water, not before, that is why you should drink regularly, even if you don't necessarily feel like drinking. Yes, if you're getting headaches and your urine is clear, then you're drinking too much, but pale yellow is what you're aiming for.

Exercise warms up your body, opens pores on your skin and helps the skin to clean itself and flush out toxins with the help of sweat.

Don't use too many exfoliators and peelers, yes, they may make your skin feel great and help clean it, but your body only fully turns over your skin every 2 weeks apparently, so anything more regular than once a week can aggravate your skin, making it drier and more prone to infections and spots.

Alcohol and cigarettes are also big problems.

It's about finding a healthy medium between your lifestyle and what you do to your skin. Personally, sometimes my skin gets dry, sometimes greasy, it's about varying your lifestyle to compensate and/or changing skin products.

One of the best ways to get rid of blackheads is to steam your face (with a hot shower, or an intense workout where you're sweating heavily) and then easing them out with your fingernails carefully and/or a blackhead remover.

Sudocream is good at treating spots, don't squeeze or aggravate them, just put some sudocream on and leave them, within a day or so they will have gone down and/or disappeared.

Also it takes about 2 weeks for your changes to show any results, so if it feels like it isn't working continue at it.

OK - there is a lot of chat about food - tbh you need to have a balanced diet- that is all.
Don't suudenly give up this or that.

use the right facial products and you will be ok

I had good results with spots using Skinoren gel and zinc/selenium tablets along with a good face wash.

Cleanse, tone and moisturise with good quality skincare products. Honestly, it'll do wonders.

I am in the same position as you. My skin has never been very good - sometimes it can just be that you don't have naturally good skin rather than something you're doing wrong.
I've been using body shop's for men range. I use face wash daily, and face scrub once a week or so. I have noticed a real difference, and it's not really that expensive - £8ish for 100ml.

Can I just mention, there is no scientific proof that eating chocolate causes bad skin. Spots can be caused by dirt in the face, imbalanced hormones, washing your face too much which strips away natural oils. I have also heard that milk can make spots worse. Try cutting down on milk.

Yeap. yeap. Overall fantastic post! Can't refute anything.

Just don't use the spot thingys that have cotton buds - as they spread the microbes ... but sophierw already knew that :p:

Hehe, but the really ironic thing, sophierw has never had spots. But she sure does know how to get rid of them if they attack!

i've just been put on roaccutane drugs for my skin and they're pretty bad.
not nice side effects, but once i'm through (in 4 months) it it's something like an 85% guarantee that i won't have anymore spots for 5/6 years.
i was told by the dermatologist that your diet doesn't affect the state of your skin.
but now i'm on these drugs i can't be exposed to sunlight for too long, can't drin throughout the duration of them, have to have blood tests every month.
so if your skin is that bad you could see a doctor about being referred to a dermatologist for these. but if they aren't really bad i wouldn't bother. no point pumping your body with drugs for the sake of nothing.

Heres what works for my skin:

Fill the sink with warm water, and very gently wash your face with antibacterial soap, only use your fingers, no flannel. Very gently remember. Now pat dry with a soft towel, very sofly so you dont aggrivate the skin. Now with Benzoyl Peroxide 5% no stronger squeeze some along the legnth of one of your fingers, thats how much to use. Rub on with you fingers so lightly that hardly your skin moves as you do it. If it becomes dry, alternate this with a day of moisturiser, it should be a water based one to stop it getting horrible and greasy. If this doesnt start working after a week get down to the gp, they may have something else you can do.

I don't believe in chemicals/lotions/masks to make your skin better - you don't need that stuff.

For starters, you may not be drinking enough water. Drink ALOT of water. It doesn't have to be bottled water, just water from the tap. The cheapest advice is right there!

Next, drink plenty of vitamin C (orange juice is awesome!) 2 glasses a day is more than enough.

I know this also might sound weird, but a tad bit of vitamin A is also good for you to give you a little bit of radiance, BUT not too much. Vitamin A is in carrots. So eat like 5-6 baby carrots a day, your skin will improve. Eat 20-30 baby carrots, and you'll wake up the next morning with an orange face! (Literally.) lol.

Vitamin E has been known to be a source of food that is very beneficial to the skin. Have foods that contain a ton of vitamin E, and you will notice your skin improve over time. Examples of vitamin E can be found using google. I just eat a lot of walnuts lol.

Finally, the BEST food to eat to improve your skin is fish. I know it may sound weird, but fish WILL make your skin become radiant over time. Have a nice large portion of fish daily. If you think that's a little too expensive, have a supplement called "Fish Oil"
Go to your nearby pharmacy. Fish oil will help your skin ALOT. It's the only supplement I take, mainly because it is just fish oil. Consult with your doctor how much you should take, etc. It various, but you increase your dosage the more you take it.

Hope I helped.
