Best way of starting this question is drawing the molecule!
Then you've got to find the largest chain and then see what substituents you have and in which positions by labelling/numbering the carbon chain of the molecule you just drew out

Iso octane is usually used for 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. This has 3 methyl groups on penultimate carbons.
Your other example is 2,2-dimethylbutane. Draw out the structure and you can see how the name is derived.
