Is it possible to become a music producer without a music degree

So I want to be a music producer. But I unfortunately can’t do a music GCSE since in my school you have to play either drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar or piano since your final year of primary school at minimum and you had to have a actual qualification it’s kinda a messed up process since someone who self taught and can play multiple reasonably difficult songs on the piano will be told to go away but someone who has a high grade in piano but in reality scrapes it with the tests will be welcomed.

So anyway i can’t do Music GCSE. It crushed me since I’ve heard it’s near impossible if not impossible to get into a music degree without one.
But I’ve been self teaching myself on FL studio and am learning a decent bit. I thought until the other day it would be a blessing in disguise as i could do a degree other than music and so if it didn’t work out for me or I needed to save up some money first I’d have a university degree.

But then the other day someone in the small music class (very very few people were allowed in to it) that I would have no chance of becoming a producer without a Music GCSE since The grades are more important than skill even if you are working for yourself.
So do I need a music GCSE to become a producer or is that person just being a stubborn D*ck
Do you think Simon Cowell has a degree in music?
It's the norm I thought

Hi @Studentboy783,

Don't feel that you *have* to study music at GCSE to pursue a career as a music producer. It's good to have that musical grounding (particularly in music theory) but you could always look at studying it at college or sixth form.

Built and run by musicians for musicians; our music industry-focused degrees in BMus (Hons) Contemporary Music Performance (COURSE CODE: W315) and BA (Hons) Music Business(COURSE CODE: W375) offers our students rigorous training as well as significant opportunities to collaborate, stretch your creativity and get involved in the music scene!

While we expect our Music Business applicants to achieve a minimum of 72 UCAS points and our Music Performance applicants to achieve a minimum of 64 UCAS points (plus pass an audition), we don't demand specific subjects be studied at GCSE or even at Level 3 i.e. A level or BTEC. What we do is look at your application as a whole so we would recommend you choose courses that complement your career ambitions - for example, as a producer, you might like to consider studying: Business Studies, English Language, Media Studies or Psychology as alternatives to Music.

Also, if you want to be a music producer in the modern music industry, it's important to look beyond *just* musical ability or technical skills! At Echo Factory, we don’t just look at music in isolation, as we believe that the entrepreneurial skills that you gain on our courses are equally important to building a successful, sustainable career. Alongside developing our students as well-rounded professional musicians, our team of experienced music industry specialists are also committed to building students’ commercial awareness, practical skills, and entrepreneurial mindsets to allow you to be fully equipped, connected and confident so that you are able to launch your career as part of your course.

It might be helpful for you to make use of our free Careers Advice Line (even if you decide you want to study elsewhere) so please feel free to get in touch via PM, the contact form on our website, or by calling 01162 253 5657!

Hope that helps!
Ashley

Simon Cowell, probably has no musical knowledge except from which artist can make him money or which artist would be good for his record label, there is a clear difference between a record producer/record executive and a record engineer/music producer/record engineer.
Simon Cowell is a business man not someone with talent or infact musical talent.
