I know a guy who claims he can hack into emails, social media accounts, webcams and people's operating systems, and would do it for people he trusts for a price. He could be talking absolute bolIocks, but he does work for a software company so it's somewhat plausible.

I know some people who can do this.
Most of them work for legitimate companies concerned with protecting cyber security.
A couple are anarchists who seem to spend most of their time on the dark web.
I take care never to get on the wrong side of any of them.

I'm friends with a guy who regularly gets paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for discovering significant vulnerabilities and various web-related applications.

He's quite good at programming but he has a really outside-the-box approach to network security.

I'm friends with a bloke who has an HND in Photoshop and he said he can hack printers. I am sure he's telling the truth because his uncle is Steve Jobs and I saw them eating together at TGI Fridays.

I'm quite adept at stress-testing, troubleshooting usability and exposing obscure programmatical errors (to the delight and chagrin of our web-development team), but don't know any "hackers" per se and haven't personally written code since I was 12.

Are you sure? As someone studying this stuff, I can almost certainly say you aren't interesting enough to warrant attention from a hacker, especially not one that wants to go the social engineering route and find out about your family. More likely, you've either made yourself a really easy target or you've become the victim of some automated attack.

The vast majority of people simply aren't interesting enough to be worth the time. The vast majority of people are also clueless enough when it comes to digital security that a hacker doesn't have to dedicate any time to you, automated tools and scripts will do the job fine. Hackers are motivated by many things such as money, status and justice. Hacking you as an individual is unlikely to provide them with anything really motivating. If anyone were going to hack the average person, it'd likely be to use you in a botnet and even then you'll find easier targets.

How exactly do you know that you've been hacked? And how are you aware this hacker is trying to find out about your family? That already doesn't add up. You've been hacked, so why do they need to find out about your family?
