Which universities do you think are good and/or best polytechnic universities? (for example, UWE, lincoln, TVU, MMU, London South Bank, Luton, plymouth, etc...).

They have a top 10 'new' universities table in the Sunday Times guide, check that out. Oxford Brookes is supposed to be far and away the best, with 22 subjects rated excellent its up there with most of the ancients/redbricks.

Crap joke alert! King's isn't a former polytechnic - it's part of the University of London.

Damn, been tricked by the person Nik P.

Dont you mean the Strand Poly?
If you look to see how old King's actually is you will see it is not a former poly. I don't think any UoL colleges were former polytechnics.

Don't take Nik P's post seriously, it's only a joke. There is rivalry between all the colleges in the University of London; one result of this is people (particularly from UCL) calling King's the 'Poly on the Strand' (just because it is less old, and is a few places lower in the league tables). My Mum, who went to UCL, says this is true.

Brighton is a good ex-polytechnic from my understanding but don't quote me on that.

Yup and the retort of a Kings student to one from UCL is 'godless scum.'

Whats this rivalry between unis about? My sis (at imperial) says Imperial people hates UCL people and UCL people hate imperilal..etc

NTU is meant to be a good former poly (And I'm not just saying that because I'm applying there!)

Wasnt aware of any specific rivalry involving Imperial but UCL v Kings is well known. I can understand there being something between Imperial and UCL as its only a couple of years since the latter was going to take over the former.

But KCL is not the newest of UoL colleges so they could have chosen a better example. I also heard from a new UCL Law student that the head of students union made some comments on KCL. Although I thought the rivalry is more between LSE and UCL. KCL used to be above UCL in the league tables, once it was above Oxford and Cambridge. There have also been criticisms regarding to the RAE scores too.
The only former poly with a reasonably good academic reputation is Oxford Brookes. Particularly avoid the London former polys like Thames Valley (officially the worst university in the country according to league tables), South Bank, East London etc. They may be in London but have a far, far worse academic reputation than than the University of London colleges.

On a side note regarding university rivalry, I found out recently that apparently Cambridge students call the APU campus in Cambridge the 'Early Learning Centre' lol! Harsh. . . .
