Hi, I was wondering if one of you could explain the technique required for GCSE English Literature?

Thanks

  • Point - make your argument clear at the start of each paragraph
  • Evidence - embed quotes and stuff to support your argument
  • Technique - identify the literary techniques used, then
  • Analyse - analyse the impact of the quote and the techniques used. Also tie in some contextual knowledge if you can - the background of the poet's life, for example, or is it critiquing political figures or policies?
  • Link - always link your analysis and quotation back to the argument you made at the start of your paragraph

We use SQI at school. statement, quotation, inference. Make sure basicly to make a clear point and then quote with a technique with it. then explain the quote and the effect it has on the audience. Finally context put lots of context in the exam markers love it

Start with a clear introduction, stating your brief answer to the question and maybe incorporate a quote. Then you use a specific structure (point, evidence, analyse/identify technique, context, relate to elsewhere, relate to question) with every point to ensure you don't end up rambling. After making around 4-5 points (if you can, make at least one of these about the structure of the text, particularly in the whole text questions), make sure you write a conclusion where you speak about the end of the extract or the play, and summarise the points you have made, and finally make a clear point about how your essay links to the question.
